Flatstyle (often called the Studio Style or Traditional Indian Painting Style) was the dominant genre of modern Native American painting that emerged in the Southwest during the 1920s and 1930s. The style is characterized by a rejection of Western European academic techniques, such as light and shadows, three-dimensional depth, linear perspective and modeled forms. Instead, it relies on crisp outlines, flat fields of solid color and isolated human figures positioned against blank backgrounds. The style is rooted in ancient Southwestern media, including Ancestral Pueblo kiva murals, rock art petroglyphs and the decorative motifs painted on hand-coiled pottery. These historical formats natively relied on flat, symbolic profiles rather than hyper-realistic depth.

By 1933, Velarde’s work was recognized nationally. At age 15, she was chosen to paint a mural for the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair. She had to scale up the line work of the flatstyle technique, and bear the psychological weight of painting a representation of Pueblo culture to be viewed by millions. /5
Poster for the 1933-34 Century of Progress International Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair. This poster features a stylized drawing of the fair’s Federal Building and Hall of States. Sadly, there are no known surviving photos of Pablita Velarde’s mural. Role: While the commission was an extraordinary achievement for a 15-year-old girl, Velarde did not travel to Chicago to paint it on-site. Instead, she worked on the project as a student under the mentorship of Anglo artist Olive Rush. The buildings erected for the 1933–1934 exposition were constructed out of cheap materials meant to be demolished immediately after the fair closed. The physical mural was destroyed when the pavilion was torn down, and no one from Dorothy Dunn’s Studio or the fair’s administration captured an archival photo of Velarde’s work before it was lost.

De Markt in Delft dit weekend omgetoverd tot sneeuwpark, professionals lieten massaal hun kunsten zien
Professionals op een snowboard kregen de uitnodiging om hun kunsten te vertonen. En daar konden Delft en omstreken van genieten, dit weekend. De Markt was voor de gelegenheid omgetoverd tot sneeuwpark, tijdens Flatstyle.

Na jaren kan er weer gesnowboard worden op de Markt in Delft: ‘Dit evenement is uniek in Nederland’
Vijftien vrachtwagens met daarin 300 kubieke meter sneeuw worden ervoor ingezet. Het snowboardevenement Flatstyle op de Delftse Markt kent dit weekend zijn tweede editie, en die trekt waarschijnlijk tussen de 10.000 en 15.000 bezoekers.
