With 35 local states of emergency declared, small communities with limited budgets and workforces are finding it difficult to manage both immediate response efforts and long-term recovery. Ryan Scragg, reeve of the RM of Garden River, highlighted the strain on his small community, noting the daunting task ahead once waters recede. Provincial officials indicate that crews are currently focused on temporary repairs, such as filling holes with riprap to restore basic traffic flow while flooding continues. Dan Palmer from the Ministry of Highways explained that a full assessment for permanent repairs will only be possible after the water levels drop and conditions dry out. It remains unclear how much emergency funding the province will provide, as the situation is still evolving. In the meantime, affected RMs are conducting their own cleanup and response operations, including using pumps to help residents. The flooding season has been particularly brutal, underscoring vulnerabilities in rural infrastructure and the need for coordinated support between local and provincial governments. Communities are hopeful for timely assistance to restore essential services and prevent further economic impacts.
