You cannot, in fact, infer anything about a person’s* moral character from their appearance or their social fluency as such.
-an ethicist who is also odd-looking and awkward; also, Stevens sucks because she’s an Islamophobe, not because she’s awkward

I tried doing this too, and my experience was that as an adult, you have this idea that you “do algebra” when in fact, it requires fluency with a whole bunch of concepts first.

I feel this personally because we recently had our French citizenship applications rejected (despite generous resources, good integration and fluency in French). A narrow technical reason was given, but it's clearly silly. The real reason IMHO is the growth in anti-immigration feeling around Europe.

My "cuss back" muscles are still on hair trigger in my seventies.
I was raised in a hard rock mining town and being a little guy I learned to cuss with fluency.

I have tuned out hard from the fan translation space, which makes me very sad. but at this point I'd rather just focus on achieving fluency and play the games unmitigated than fuck with the emotional roller-coaster of "oh wow that finally got-- ah. never mind."

Lan Wangji was one of the foremost cultivators not only of the Lan sect, but of his entire generation! He had earned the title of Master of Inquiry at a very young age! His fluency in the qin language was—right up until this particular moment, at least—widely acknowledged to be flawless!

I think this kind of subversion, along with jokes like Evelyn Normielib, helps create a layer of abstraction that makes people who agree but are afraid of judgment more comfortable. "Digital native" now isn't just someone intuitively familiar with tech it's fluency in the grammar of memes
