Other important components of Little Ouse aquatic vegetation: feathery fronds of River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis) - see maybe its seedlings; & other umbellifers, Fool's Watercress (Helosciadium nodiflorum) on the river bed & upstanding Lesser Water-Parsnip (Berula erecta) on the margins.

I like this pic of a Common Bithynia (Bithynia tentaculata) at the end of the rainbow. With more River Nerites (Theodoxus fluviatilis) & their eggs, Acute Bladder Snail (Physella acuta), plus Common River-Snail (Viviparus viviparus) & chomping Great Ram's-Horn (Planorbarius corneus). #MolluscMonday

Plenty of characterful Chabot Bullheads (Cottus perifretum), many young, under rocks in this reach of River Little Ouse, confirming feeling it's in good health. Never seen such high density of big River Nerites (Theodoxus fluviatilis), still lots tiny white eggs. NB chalk on this #ChalkStream bed.

In River Little Ouse at Brandon Bank, a fair amount feathery leaves of River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis). Also bit of Lesser Water-Parsnip (Berula erecta). Saw only 1 patch of Fan-leaved Water-Crowfoot (Ranunculus circinatus). Unsure if the other is Forgetmenot (Myosotis)? #wildflowerhour

Here's more of the friendly European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) under the Iron Bridge. Also Common Roach (Rutilus rutilus). Plus some of their fry, with a Bleak (Alburnus alburnus) fry in their midst.
We saw no big fish in the 750m of the River Little Ouse upstream of Brandon Bank. #rivers #fish

The other main #fish of Reach Lode was shoals of Rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) hunting above the canopy of Water-Milfoil forest. Below were Roach (Rutilus rutilus), Perch (Perca fluviatilis) & a few young Bream (Abramis brama) presumably children of these big beasts bsky.app/profile/nume....

A particular excitement of River Little Ouse at Santon Downham was discovering the tiny white orbs scattered over the riverbed are eggs of the exquisite River Nerite (Theodoxus fluviatilis). Always ❤️ seeing River Limpet (Ancylus fluviatilis). In places there were drifts of Pea Clam (Euglesa) shells.

I find the Little Ouse consistently the River with biggest fish in East Anglia. Here are some very tame, good size European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) - one a bit grey with disease - at Santon Downham, as ever, amongst woody debris. I like their rosy cheeks! Also some chub, fry & sadly, drinks cans.
August 22, 2026 at 10:25 PM
Another prominent macrophyte of note in the River Little Ouse above Santon Downham was the magnificent stands of River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis), in full bloom, the umbels borne on mighty great stalks - an inch thick & 2 m tall - belying the laciness of its flowers and submerged leaves.

Lovely good-news macrophytes of Burwell Lode include nationally Vulnerable Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae), Water Starwort (Callitriche), Fan-leaved Water-Crowfoot (Ranunculus circinatus) & River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis). Hard to think of these being ripped out. #Wildflowerhour 18/25

Like Northern Pike, European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) are a fish that don't like their water too warm. It is perhaps for that reason that I saw a shocking number of dead young ones scattered on the river bed, maybe 10 over the 2 km I covered, not only where the vegetation had been cleared. 7/25

By Little Ouse river mouth there was a worrying diversity of alien #invasivespecies including lots of European Bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) besides the lovely young Zander (Sander lucioperca), shown here next to a handsome (native!) European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) resting on a lily pad. #fish 2/12

The European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) is king of the Little Ouse at Little Ouse village, including the largest I've ever seen, maybe 20 years old, living under one boat. The next boat down had medium sized Perch and the next boat, small ones. youtu.be/CTvDlaLVk8U?.... #Fish #Rivers #Teamfish 3/25

Tho' water was mostly clear enough to see the bottom, it deteriorated in wake of a couple of boats that passed by, as well this family of Mute Swans.
A Woodpigeon had a riverside nest by a dock.
River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis) was among the dominant macrophytes. #BirdsSeenIn2025 16/25

Besides the dominant Yellow Water-Lilies (Nuphar lutea), there is plenty of Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) in the Cut-off Channel & great subaqua forests of River Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis). #Wildflowerhour #flower #rivers #norfolk #MacrophyteMonday 12/15
