A bolete covered in a bright creamy yellow fungus known as the Bolete Eater, Hypomyces chrysospermus. The little nodules under the cap are part of this invading fungus. The mushroom stank to the high heavens as expected. A focus stacked composite of 22 pictures.

A pair of Russula pose in the moss covered trail edge. THe left one's cap appears to be nearly fully desiccated with the gills showing their beautiful wavy pattern due to the cap drying out. The one on the right is a little more plump with moisture even if it the cap and gills show some evidence of predation by slugs.

Köttigite is a phosphate named by Dana himself, in honour of the German chemist Köttig, hence the retention of the “¨”, which is quite rare.

Here it is in tiny spheres (0.5 mm) of the most beautiful pink!

One of the latest additions to the collection. I didn't adjust the image's saturation, but I may have gone a little overboard with the lighting in all directions. In any case, it really brings out the deep green color of this aegirine!

Is it vanadinite? Not at all! It’s aragonite that forms these beautiful hexagonal crystals, stacked in all directions.

This specimen comes from the Spanish region of Aragon, which gave the mineral its name.

Finally some mushrooms and fungi have appeared!

A month later than last year, but not surprising given the dry summer and early autumn. Loving focus stacking, although rather time-consuming; ended up using HeliconFocus software.

The cut end of a log showing a couple seasons worth of growth with some fresh recent healthy growth as evidenced by the guttation being emitted by the largest top middle and lower middle fruiting bodies of our Red Belted Conk species Fomitopsis mounceae. Look for the fluffy moss growing on the edges. A composite of 19 pictures were focus stacked for this one picture.

This was a fun, new to me, tooth fungi species to find!

I think these are Phellodon atratus, no common name.

If my ID is correct, Mushroom Color Atlas lists them as a species for dying some gorgeous patina green colors!

The picture is of a toothed fungus, possibly the species Phellodon atratus, with a light purple hue dominating the cap before transitioning to a lighter brown toward the bottom of the stipe. Five distinct spires in varying stages of development are present from the mature one in the back with an expanded cap with teeth growing under it. The next to develop teeth would likely be the larger one to the left that has started to develop their purple cap. The other 3 spires are sheltered under the larger one. The mushrooms are growing out of the forest floor that is absolutely covered in bright green moss and conifer debris. This picture is a focus stack composite of 63 pictures.

Psilomelane is no longer recognized as a mineral, but rather the generic name for a mixture of manganese oxides. It forms stunning botryoidal concretions!

Darkling beetle
