On this #ForamFriday, I re-up this paper first-authored by @univ-amu.fr PhD student Vincent Guarinos, which is now formally published in @egubg.bsky.social:

I'm happy to share two new #symbiosis papers freshly out of the press:
- Symbiont shuffling in foraminiferal holobiont doi.org/10.1093/isme... #foramfriday
- Ciliates symbionts in #deepsea shrimps doi.org/10.1111/jeu....
Thermal responses and Symbiodiniaceae shuffling in a Red Sea foraminifer holobiont
Abstract. Symbiont-bearing benthic foraminifera, like corals, rely on endosymbionts for growth and nutrition and experience bleaching under heat stress. So

A xenophyophore (macrosized protist!) to the right, a dome-shaped sponge? to the left. What conversations they must have! #spongethursday #okeanos Lumpy Seamount North Atlantic

Meanwhile, in the platform formerly known as Twitter, we are discussing Xenophyophore (which is actually a type of deep water larger benthic #foraminifera).
May 22, 2026 at 3:06 PM
The Xenophyophore is a single-celled organism that can grow several inches across, building its body out of sand, shells, and other seafloor debris. It’s a walking trash castle, but it’s thriving. #marinelife #science

Rhizaria is a magical branch where multiple lineages evolved multicellularity, macroscopic size, and/or photosynthetic symbiosis independently from their kelp & plant relatives. Some forams, Gromia, and the collodarians can all grow to significant sizes, easily visible without magnification

Pseudopodia of the foraminifer Ammonia 🐾
The organism itself moves slowly, but inside, particles shuttle back and forth at high speed 🚚
This behavior is thought to involve the cytoskeleton (actin and microtubules) and motor proteins that move along them 🔬

Tiny Baculogypsina (“star sand”), Calcarina (“sun sand”), and Neorotalia — all foraminifera! They really are adorable, aren’t they?

Globigerina bulloides d’ORBIGNY

Foraminifera, unicellular organisms of the sea
Planktonic life species
The long diameter is about 200 μm from
It is also cute to see the interference color under a differential interference microscope
Thin spines are also made of calcium carbonate
May 22, 2026 at 2:50 PM
These are some very unhappy Globigerina bulloides #Forams. I have no idea what is going on here. Are they decalcifying? What are the vacuoles around the specimen? Until this field season, I had never observed this. These were also in the high CO2 "bad water". Has anyone observed this before?
