villagers are indefensible but imo it makes sense for an enemy to be tall and foreboding and to blend into the darkness in a game where the main source of problems is the lack of light (which is something modern minecraft sometimes lets us forget)

A great review of a delicately crafted book. Lord showcases evolved skill, weaving cozy and foreboding elements at the start, and revealing more and more of the latter as the story progresses. Not a cozy book at all, by the story’s end. One of my favourites.

Snippet 1 of 3: The foreboding turned to outright dread. Maze had no reason to be calling him that urgently unless something was wrong. He swiped to accept the call and said, “What—” “Your mother is trying to kill Chloe. Why the fuck didn’t you answer?” He sat up straighter. “What did she do? Where is she?” Kill Chloe. Oh, no. No, she wouldn’t be doing anything of the sort. He’d find his mother and— “She acquired a bomb and put it under Chloe’s car. I don’t know where she is, but I’m tracking her down now. Chloe isn’t answering either. Are you with her?” For a single heartbeat, the world stood still. And then it dealt him a blow that had him on his feet at last, halfway to the elevator in a blink. The phone was no longer in his hands. He didn’t notice. Bomb. Car. Chloe, not answering when she’d almost certainly been looking at her phone for hours, when she was leaving to drive home… Time funneled around him as he made it to the Corvette and tore out of the parking garage. The building, the street, other drivers, traffic lights—it all blurred together, registering only enough for Lucifer to swerve around anything and everything getting in his way. All his focus was on the steakhouse where he’d told Chloe to meet him, as if he could materialize there faster the harder he concentrated. She had to be okay. She just—had to be. Snippet 2 of 3: The guilt was choking him thick and fast now. Why the fuck didn’t you answer? Are you with her? He should have been. Chloe was only there because he’d asked her to be, for him. He should have been there eating with her, a shield against his mother, because she’d never risk him getting caught up in an explosion. He should have been there. But he hadn’t even bothered to tell her not to go at all. If Chloe was hurt, it was all his fault. If she was… if she’d actually… No. No. Hy’s was seconds away now. He rounded a corner so fast his tires screeched and saw the blinking red and blue lights casting a glow over the block ahead. No. No. No. He slammed the breaks, coming within inches of hitting the cop cars blocking the rest of the way. People shouted. He didn’t hear what they said. He ran, looking everywhere for her, eyes skipping over the scene in horror. The charred wreck of a car. The glass and chunks of metal showering the street. Police and firefighters cordoning off the area, herding civilians away. Chloe. Standing off to the side, hugging herself in a gray sweater, gaze fixed on the buzz of activity around her. Snippet 3 of 3: All the breath left him in one huge exhale, the sheer relief enough to make even his knees weak. Safe. She was alive and safe, not a single mark on her. He checked, again and again, as he hurried forward. No rips in the sweater. No cuts on her face, her bare legs. Whatever had happened, it hadn’t touched her. “Detective,” he said, voice a ragged gasp. “You’re all right.” She looked up at him. A tinge of surprise cut through her expression. Something was off about it, but he couldn’t think what. “Lucifer?” “I’m sorry I wasn’t here,” he said, the words out before he knew it. His hand was reaching for her almost on its own, the urge to touch her cheek too much to ignore. Just his fingertips would be enough, just so he could sweep them along to her hair and know she was fine. “I’m so sorry, Detect—” He froze. His fingers had gone right through her. He could see them, see the point of contact where they should have met her cheek. But there was nothing substantial under his fingertips. Only a coolness he was intimately familiar with, one that was so very, very wrong. Chloe just kept staring up at him with that same odd expression, eyes searching his with some kind of desperation. Lost. She looked lost. “Lucifer,” she said again. “I think something’s wrong.”

I understand that for similar reasons, unfortunately. It is funny how tuned in you get to that type of energy. I was just talking to a friend today saying I feel a heavy foreboding energy in the air. Like a shift. I guess we’re more intuitive than we think.

I woke up this morning to more Democratic flips and then Apple music let me know a new album dropped from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and I do feel Tom is grinning that grin at the timing of rare tracks and remixes of their Southern rock sound.

I know I am.

No Sleep Til L.A. debuts rare, newly mixed tracks featuring Petty and Mudcrutch: the lung-busting "Parade of Loons," the foreboding "You're Gonna Learn," and the lip-curling blues riffs of "Another Lonely Night," as well as a cover of the Burrito Brothers' "Sin City" and dusky ballad "Since You Said You Love Me," which never materialized on an album (but has made an appearance on priorHeartbreakers compilations).
