I'm pursuing a sustainable economics certificate at Capilano University. For one course, I'm doing a two-week, daily series of posts on native animals I've photographed, and their vulnerability to climate change.

Today: Oregon forestsnails!

A very close-up photo of a snail crawling along the forest floor, with a blackish body emerging from a shell that is mostly warm browns, with patchy chipped patterns increasing inward along the spiral. The Oregon Forestsnail, Allogona townsendiana, is a somewhat larger land snail that lives in very close association with stinging nettle, in only a few dozen small spots across the Lower Mainland of BC. They live in the forest floor, often Climate change isn't the most immediate threat to these snails; their biggest threat is development of their habitat for residential or land use, and the clearing of nettle stands. But climate still poses a modest threat: according to the species' COSEWIC status report, climate change is increasing drought conditions in the region, which is dangerous to these snails who require constantly moist microclimates on the forest floor. Climate change is also raising the risk of serious flooding of the Fraser River, which could damage or wipe out habitat. While not immediate dangers, these risks compound things for this already-endangered snail.

I might've seen an Oregon forestsnail. I'll be sure to snap a picture next time.

Seeing lots of stinging nettle, said to niece, "I bet there are Oregon forestsnails here. They like stinging nettle."

A few steps later, look who's on the path!

Storey Burn and Gravelle Brothers Trails, Tillamook State Forest, Oregon
two shy but curious deer checking me out on the Storey Burn trail in Tillamook SF, Ore. the trail is a narrow dirt path through dense forest of ferns, rhododendrons, bigleaf maples, and douglas firs. the trunk of a doug fir occupies the right side of the frame in the foreground, with the two cute little deer somewhat obscured by foliage an oregon forestsnail living its best life in tillamook SF, oregon. the shot is a closeup but this guy is just two or three inches long lovely little reddish orange blossom in tillamook state forest

This snail has quite bright colors; all the rest on the path had me asking, "Prithee, Snail, why so pale?" 😆 Which I really thought was a thing - a quote from a poem. (Nope.)

[See Why So Pale And Wan, Fond Lover? Poem by Sir John Suckling]
An Oregon Forestsnail with a bright shell in greens, browns, and yellowand moves along a shaded path near Swofford Pond in Lewis County, WA. The body of the snail is a darker taupe with lighter mottling and a green tinge to the underside.

The front page of an illustrated zine/comic, showing a stoat walking off with a large sack on its back, which contains Fraser the cat! An illustration of a forest bird flying through a cloudy winter sky. The wind is blowing strongly.
