I swore after the trio of Plains Forktails I wasn't going to post another tonight. But this one is too nice not to post.

Slaty-backed Forktail (Enicurus schistaceus).
Another of our forktails, smartly dressed in black & white.
There is river in the highlands called “Sungei Burung” (bird river) to indicate their habitat.

I promise there were more than Plains Forktails on this day, but they were the dominant species at this site. I also had Familiar Bluets and Tule Bluets.

What are these damselflies doing, you might ask?

IT. THEY ARE DOING IT.

These look to be Rambur’s forktails. I took this over a decade ago in Austin, Texas, at Zilker Botanical Garden.

Forktails are native to Asia, all characterized by their long “split” tail. There are 8 species globally, of which this image contains: 1) Slaty-backed 2) White-crowned 3) Spotted 4) Little and 5) Black-backed #BirdsSeenIn2026

Species variety is typically very narrow in June in Colorado, but quantities this past year were very good.

Happy Sunday! Other tasks today but I did get in to process a single image. After finishing Sawhill/Walden Ponds, now it is Barr Lake SP and this damselfly.

Long travelling day, from warm lowlands at 750m asl, chilly lunch at 3700m, now at 3000m asl. Waterfalls & little forktails up to Thrumsingla (pass), then 3 species of pheasant - 14 blood pheasants (some great views, photo from Merlin again), 7 satyr tragopans (most tricky/brief) & 1 female monal

Forktails (or bluetails: genus Ischnura) are tiny threadlike #damselflies. It looks like the earliest species evolved in Australasia in the lower Miocene (?), & in that time have spread through most of the rest of the world: fantastic.

Thank you! I love forktails, and have never seen this species

Wow awesome, where are they found? The only ones I find are jewelling damselflies and forktails

Thank you, looking forward to reading that!

Reminds me that I took this photo of two identical Rambur's forktails in copula in Mexico a few years ago... the one on the bottom is a male-mimic female

Thank you! I love Forktails, but they're so small that they can be hard to photograph (or even find in the first place!)

Considering there are forktails and all sorts of flying terrors that delight in feasting on succulent tiny goats in the area, yes. Very.

After looking at dragonflies yesterday for Insectopia week, we can't forget about our damselflies!

Those IDs are trickier, and we've had lot of damselflies observed in the Arb who are recorded on iNaturalist only as Bluets, Dancers, or Forktails:

It's Insectopia week at Nature Camp, so we thought that here on Bluesky we'd also take a look at some of the insects and other invertebrates who have been uploaded to our @inaturalist.bsky.social collection project, the Humber Arboretum Atlas:
