A snippet from my WIP. It reads: Later, Vash quietly steps underneath the shade beneath No Man's Land's oldest apple tree. It — he — has grown and spread, has rooted so thick and thoroughly one may find children sitting on the exposed wood, yapping away at each other. They love to climb on the branches, too, hanging from them with both hands and laughing wildly. Now, minutes after nightfall, the kids have gone home. It's just Vash here, Vash and his brother-become-orchard. "You know why I'm here, don’t you?" To be completely frank, Vash doesn't know if Knives still lingers here. If his words are heard. For all he knows, his twin's consciousness left for the Higher Dimension the instant he finished morphing that final time. It continues: But it's comforting, talking to his kin like they used to, centuries ago now. Back when the universe consisted of only them, and a human woman they loved like a mother, and a spaceship humming away among the stars. "I've been thinking about this a while", says Vash, though his brother would surely remember, were he around. A mere few decades have passed since Vash stumbled here, heart hammering and fingertips tingling from touching the multiverse twice in the same day. Seeking refuge from the too-silent sands sweeping the base of a certain machine gun crucifix in the aftermath. "Hard not to, y'know? Always wondered what that was like, for him."
