Bugger...Varroa mites have finally found my home hives. Clear last month, 24 mites in the test chamber today.
Immediately put in Formic acid strips - they use a component of #bee venom that the bees can tolerate, but is lethal for the mites.

Wait, sorry:

The formula on the left, formic acid, has one too many bonds.

PWNED, EPIC STYLE.

Scientists revive old Bulgarian recipe to make yogurt with ants. Ants carry lactic and acetic acid bacteria that help coagulate milk, as well as formic acid to acidify it. They even partnered with Danish chefs to create three recipes using ant yogurt. arstechnica.com/science/2025...

At Noma, where they famously serve ants, our server told us they have to keep the ants all separated from each other in the prep area bc if they get into clan wars they’ll use up all their formic acid fighting, and taste like nothing
"Tastes like ants"

"When did you eat ants?"

(Not wrong, it was bleu cheese which shares formic acid with ants).

Scientists have developed an electrode that can capture CO2 directly from flue gas & straight from the atmosphere, no purification required. The electrode process turns the CO₂ into formic acid, a weak acid currently used to preserve livestock feed & tan leather buff.ly/sUIzHlC #ShareGoodNewsToo
Turning industrial exhaust into useful materials with a new electrode - American Chemical Society
Researchers have designed a specialized electrode that captures airborne CO2 and directly converts it into a useful chemical material called formic acid.

I was originally going to write "Full of FORMIC ACID" but I wasn't sure if that would be too niche for my audience???

Anyways 🐜
the ants are descending

Bert has been ‘Anting’

Sitting in an ant colony & allowing them to crawl on him. A form of feather maintenance as the ants secret formic acid acting as a fungicide to control parasites & maintain plumage health

The open mouth is because birds don’t sweat, they pant like dogs

Some would find it a formic experience.

That could be formic acid (bad) or butyric acid (not so bad). Butyric acid is the stuff that makes stink bombs work, smells like vinegar / vomit / body odor. Formic acid smells like ants.

So. You can make carbon monoxide by combining sulfuric acid with formic acid. Sulfuric acid can be found in drain cleaners; formic acid is used sometimes in beekeeping.

They got a search warrant for Aric's Google account and found

Took me a moment to realize that these are decapitated ant heads. Seems there’s a formic Reign of Terror happening on my patio.

Bert has been Anting

Some birds rub ants on their feathers & skin, or lie as Bert did where the ants are active, & wallow with wings spread

Ants secrete chemicals like formic acid to aid in the defense against bacteria & parasites

This secretion may also make them edible..

Blue Jay, Did you know that they perform "Anting." The jays rub ants on their feathers, draining the ants of their formic acid before they gobble them up?
