RCMP in Fort Smith say the suspect in a shooting that wounded three people this weekend was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The RCMP have arrested a person suspected of a shooting on Saturday morning in Fort Smith, N.W.T., which injured three people and led to a community-wide lockdown lasting over 13 hours. The suspect was taken into custody without incident at around 4:30 a.m. MT on Sunday. Charges are pending further investigation. Mayor Dana Fergusson, who also owns the bar where the shooting occurred and was an eyewitness, described the arrest as bringing a 'gentle sense of relief.' The incident began during an altercation outside Dirty O'Fergies bar, which was the opening event of the Fireweed Festival. After the shooting, the community was placed under a shelter-in-place order, and emergency responders assisted victims. Fergusson helped evacuate people to safety until help arrived. The RCMP deployed resources from Yellowknife and Yukon to aid in the investigation. Following the lockdown, community members supported each other by providing groceries and information. The Fireweed Festival, which was postponed during the lockdown, resumed with organizers emphasizing resilience and community solidarity. Police are seeking witnesses to the altercation that preceded the shooting, asking anyone present to contact investigators between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. MT on Monday.
