A 2022 study in #ScienceAdvances reveals that elephants have an exceptionally high number of facial neurons—perhaps the most known to any land-dwelling mammal.

SOOTHING BIRD FACT 🐦

Some bird species have two foveae in each eye—that's the plural of fovea, the spot in your field of vision that's in sharpest focus. Imagine having *two* in-focus areas of vision for each eye, one in front and one to the side!

"Embryology reveals a morphological signature of ancestral diurnality maintained in a nocturnal lineage"

Embryology reveals a morphological signature of ancestral diurnality maintained in a nocturnal lineage
Abstract. Evolutionary transitions to diurnality are often associated with specialized ocular morphology, such as pits (foveae) in the retina. Foveae are r

Eagles have vision four to five times sharper than humans, with 20/5 eyesight that allows them to spot a rabbit from over three miles away. Their retinas contain up to one million cone cells per square millimeter, and two foveae enable them to focus forward and sideways at once.

This is one of the Gryon misellum group - clypeus has paired foveae near the lateral margins (a Gryon characteritic).

Lucky to be in Tromsø on a sunny (though chilly) day and visit the Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden. Along with a lot of great bumble bees and countless little flies saw a miner #bee (genus Andrena) and its mimic, a bumble fly (genus Criorhina). It's #flyfriday already somewhere!

Equally tiny and (to me) more surprising bee on the same flower - smallest Andrena miner #bee I’ve ever seen, thought it was a small sweat bee until I looked at the photos. (On Sisyrinchium angustifolium, blue-eyed grass.)

Looks to me like miner bee, genus Andrena. If I’m not mistaken she has the furry vertical furrows (foveae) just inside the eye (much easier to see head-on). Beautiful!

Pop-up protest at Clairemont and N Druid Hills yielded lots of supportive honks and the discovery of a nesting aggregation of miner bees (likely Andrena barbara) on the traffic island. Fortunately I had my camera in the car to document it for #iNaturalist.

Note that a bird’s eyes are significantly larger than iris and pupil that is casually observed.

The image on the right showcases the “tube” shape that Owl eyes have.

I got these photos of a friendly Tree Swallow in the evening light a couple of weeks ago. The silhouette it casted in the evening sky is quite striking! Another interesting feature of these photos is how Tree Swallow feathers are iridescent and are only blue in certain conditions. #birds 🪶
