Frogbit, Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. I don't see Frogbit very often, so I was delighted to see masses of it today. #WildflowerHour

Aphids on Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) in the middle of Wheatfen Broad, Norfolk. Frogbit isn't recorded as a host on the InfluentialPoints website. Does anyone recognise the species? @norfolknats.bsky.social

First there was a pond. Then there was Frogbit. And a smaller pond. And a pot of tea. It was a good day.

After a morning of plant id training, a gentle walk round Woodwalton Fen NNR was a perfect counterpoint. Masses of Frogbit in the ditches and Marsh Sow-thistle along the drain banks while Greater Water-parsnip and Greater Bladderwort were rarer treats...

I was in the centre of Rotherham this morning for a meeting, right by the river. So I had a look for any interesting plants.

Plenty of Frogbit, which is otherwise rare in South Yorkshire, and declined enormously. It must be floating down from somewhere upstream.

This made my heart skip a beat this week: Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) and Tubular Water-dropwort (Oenanthe fistulosa) growing in profusion side by side. They may have been planted in a garden pond, but nonetheless, what a triumph!

This Hornet Hoverfly a large mimic species buzzed down low to settle on Frogbit for a drink in my garden pond. For scale the kidney shaped Frogbit leaves are at least 20mm across. #InsectThursday
