“Forgotten” by Kyla Houbolt, from her forthcoming book, *Becoming Altar* asterismbooks.com/product/beco...
@luaz.bsky.social
Forgotten one thing we’ve forgotten is how lovely it is for everyone to have a frog. your frog can sit in your bathtub, or if you have one in your yard, preferably a shady area because it needs dampness. your frog will sing to you though it may take a while for the frog to compose the appropriate arias meant for you and you alone. when it does though you will suddenly drop everything you are doing and listen to the most glorious hypnotic love song, a love song to the whole universe but to you as that universe, and without any words the frog will convey to you that you and you alone have a unique and precious role to play in the unfolding of all that is to happen next. as you listen to this magical singing you realize that you have known what to do all along, that it is just exactly what you have always done and been doing and all is well, and the frog has given you permission to be your own deity and the wonder of it is how very good this feels even though nothing at all has changed except that, now, you have your frog.

I finally saw the frog before I poured more water in the rock dish, so was able to add water without disturbing frog. Image of frog sitting on wet rocks, sleeping.

Frog in the waterbowl
Frog in a glass bowl of water, hanging out with its nether parts immersed. A dry oak leaf floats on the other side of the bowl.

Ah! Made it!
Same tiny green frog as in prev. post, nestled against a reddish rock in the soaking pool.

Saw something scurrying down the pole that holds the hummingbird feeder. Lizard? Frog! Took refuge from my camera on the pyracantha leaves.
Little frog on pyracantha leaf. Same little frog, enlarged a bit and a better view of his handsomeness. (Her? Who knows with a frog? Not me!)

Then later still, out in the garden, spied this little on a basil leaf. #FrogFeed

So many frogs today! First, three! in the little dish of rocks I put out, it's just an aluminum deep dish pie pan that got saved; was the only thing I could find of the right shape.
Two frogs in the little rock pool. I only saw the one on the left as it emerged while I slowly added water. Then, this third frog appeared right by the edge of the dish.

That's actually really awesome to know that you're actively curating it! Thank you for doing that! It's not your fault that other people misuse those tags. Do you think it might be helpful to come up with a more unique tag for people to use to specifically populate posts to your feed? #FrogFeed?

Then, fourth and possible fifth frog, first on the boards of the porch and then spied in the rosemary pot. (That may be the same frog.) #FrogFeed
Frog in the sun on dry boards of porch, a dry grass stalk provides no shade. Later on I spied this one in the just-watered rosemary pot. Possibly this is the same frog as I saw in the sun earlier.

#poetry #frogfeed -- Becoming Other
Becoming Other She didn't know the difference between toads and frogs though since I've learned it: it's not that toads have bumpy skin, it's the frogs' long hind legs to jump with though my dad always called them Hoppy-toads. Also, I learn all toads are frogs (but not all frogs are toads) further confusing the issue. Perhaps there's no real distinct dividing line. Some frogs, called frogs, live deep in the desert, buried, waiting for rain. Some are thought to call it with their songs. --Kyla Houbolt, 11/17/2024 Little brown (toad-colored) frog on a spiny blackberry leaf. A bit of black wire mesh shows in the background, and a few more leaves peep in the edges.

Boy's gotta eat! Boy's gotta have his supper!

Here Nerves, an adult male Solomon Island Leaf Frog, makes quick work of a banded cricket. The footage here is heavily slowed down. What you saw here happened in the blink of an eye in real time!

Because, how do you tell one frog from another? Or from a toad, for that matter? These are all about the same size, so probably from the same litter, except frogs don't have those, um. The same spawning? #FrogFeed
