#Teableau 30Mar26

'Friends are the flowers in the garden of life.' Noxious weeds, sharp stones, stinging wasps matter less when flowers are also there, lifting our spirits.

#Tea #Friendship
Tea tableau in lavender, white, and green. Upon a white cloth embroidered with green frostflowers, there is a tea cozy in Springer lavender upon a mint green crocheted doily, and a handpainted vintage lavender bisque cup and saucer. There is a vintage creamer that is white with green trimand blue and pink flowers. In back there is a small white canvas with painted and appliqued flowers of green and thistle color, with a monarch butterfly in the corner and the phrase Get Well Soon printed in purple. There is a small kraft paper card at center covered in varicolored daisies. The tea is Buttermint herbal from Twinings.

Frost flowers, many origins vs one.
#photography #frostflowers #ice #frost
A frost flower has spread out from three sides of the stem of a dittany plant in swoops and swirls and even a small curl encircling the stem. This frost flower has made a single elegant circle from one spot on the dittany plant.

#FrostFlowerFriday The delicacy of these ribbons of ice is my favorite feature of winter. #photography #frostflowers #B&W #macro #winter #nature
This black and white photo of a frost flower shows the delicate curves of these gifts of early winter. I shot this with a 105mm macro lens with a nearly wide open apperture. This allowed me to keep the edge that I wanted in focus and blur the rest of the frost flower.

#frostflowers try their hands (What hands?) at tying bows and ribbons #photography #nature #winter
Ice ribbons from a dittany stem produce shapes that resemble bows if you use your imagination.

It's #FrostFlowerFriday. The variety of shapes of frost flowers amazes me. #photography #frostflowers #winter #B&W #crystallofolia
This is a pinwheel shaped frost flower photo that I converted to black and white. The light was dull and it was in a deep shadow, but the shape was interesting to me.

Part of the fun of photographing #frostflowers is deciding how to take the shot -- so many sides and angles. They can look very different from different perspectives. For example, these two shots of one frost flower.
#photography #winter #Indiana
This frost flower is seen from the top and one side with an "arm" across its top and and a swirling "skirt" at the bottom with a grooved vertical shaft. From this angle, the "arm" is on the left side, the shaft and skirt aren't visible. Instead there is a "wall" with two deep curves protruding from it.

The #FrostFlowerFriday theme continues. Frost flowers have a number of names: frost faces, ice castles, ice blossoms, or the fancy one #crystallofolia. #photography #dittany #nature #frostflowers
This frost flower is one of the more symmetrical ice ribbons that dittany, water, and freezing temperatures produce. The brown stem in the middle of the photo is the plant that the water squeezed out of as it froze. I never know where I am going to see a frost flower, but the common dittany likes to grow at the edges of opennings in the woods. I found this one alongside our road on the way to bring back the trash can.

[info on frost flowers in 1st alt]
A tall, swirling frost flower is partially transparent where it is melting. In my area, the dittany plant can form frost flowers when the temperatures are below freezing overnight but the ground is not already frozen. The cold temperatures cause liquid in the stem of the dittany to expand, causing cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then forced out throw the cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem creating the 'flower'. This frost flower has a window in it that lets you see a structure within it.

Here's another frost flower. I cropped this photo a lot to show the streaky patterns in the icy ribbons. The cropping made the background grainy. The actual frost flower was only about 2 inches (5 cm) tall. #photography #frostflowers #nature
White ribbon-like ice that has been extruded from the stem of a dittany plant makes an interesting and fragile natural sculpture on the forest floor. The ice that had been in sunlight was beginning to melt and was clear.

Frost flowers, a phenomenon that occurs this time of year for certain plants when there’s (1) freezing air and (2) moist but not frozen soil. Salvia coccinea photographed.
The base of Salvia coccinea stems where water in the stems escape and form intricate white ice structures commonly called frost flowers due to freezing air. frostflowers jackfrost winteriscoming

The first frost flowers that I've seen this season showed up in the woods yesterday. #photography #frostflowers #nature
The white ribbon-like flower on the stem of a dead plant is not a flower at all or a fungus. Frost flowers are icy structures that emerge from the stalks of thin stemmed plants. The water in the plant is forced out of the plants in these fragile sheets. Like snowflakes, frost flowers are infinite in variety. The ones in our area mostly emerge from dittany (Cunila origanoides).

First freeze created frost flowers - rare ice ribbons on plant stems that last hours before melting.

Need perfect conditions, disintegrate at touch. Found across Eastern U.S.

Each unique, gone for a year.

The Friday Digital Archive Dive is uncertain about frost flowers this year (drought, unseasonably warm) so is picking some from the many in the archive (see 1st ALT image for how they are formed).

Two frost flowers close together, both with swirls and ripples. In my area, the dittany plant can form frost flowers when the temperatures are below freezing overnight but the ground is not already frozen. Water is then forced out throw the cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem creating the 'flower'. A tall frost flower with two 'wings' and a swirling ribbon. A frost flower with small ripples, curves, and a solitary curved ribbon at the bottom. A melting frost flower is almost transparent.

Frost flowers! Sometimes, when conditions are just right, frost makes lovely patterns on our back door window. Short-lived, but beautiful!

Hrid from Fire Emblem Heroes as Erik, the Phantom of the Opera. He is holding his Angel of Music (Sky) close to him, pointing an icy dagger dangerously close to her neck. Sky appears to be reluctant, pulling his arm away from her neck. There is a blue candlelit ambience to the scene. Sky and Hrid from Fire Emblem Heroes in their wedding attire, exchanging their vows in a frozen wedding altar. Sky as the bride wears a glamorous white wedding dress adorned with long, graceful white feathers, gold and blue touches on her sleeves and boots. Hrid as the groom wears a gallant white tuxedo with a long cape, shoulder pad and boots similar to his original attire, with gold and blue touches to match his now-wife. Sky holds a bouquet of Sunflowers, Frostflowers (ice blue roses) and Lilies of the Valley and Hrid caresses his wife. The couple gaze lovingly into each other's eyes, ready to kiss. Bust-up painting of Nifl and Fjorm from Fire Emblem Heroes in their Ice Tribe outfits. Fjorm is in a light blue figure-skating outfit, taking the viewer by the hand (red glove). Nifl is in a lavenderish outfit, waving at the viewer. There are sparkles around her icicle ears and collar. Dreamy pastel background. Sky, Queen of Nifl. She wears a fluffy white cape with fur on the shoulders, high heels and a regal blue dress with gold touches, customary attire in Nifl. There are snowflake details on her collar and the bottom of her dress. The inside of her overskirt is like the night sky sprinkled with stars. Her head is adorned with a golden diadem and halo made of ice. Her silky, blonde hair reaches her hips. Queen Sky is smiling and blushing posing with her left hand close to her chest to show her wedding ring.
