Finally, spotted this on the way out. An upside down galvanometer.

I never really trusted electricity until I created it myself 'out of thin air'.
I made a wet cell battery and tinkered together a galvanometer out of a magnetic compass and a few feet of Bell wire!
Full disclosure: I found out how to do both from 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴.
Knowledge is (in this case literally) power! 🙇

Jan. 2, 1926: Richard Caton, a British physiologist who in 1875 used a galvanometer to detect electrical impulses from brains of living animals, dies at 83. His find would later be cited as crucial in the discovery of the brain’s alpha waves. He also served as Liverpool mayor.

The appification of scientology! "Dewey knows about [the 'psycho-galvanometer']. We can sell thousands of them as distributors for 60% profit. I have a use for them nobody suspects yet."

I love the simplicity of electromagnetic induction. Coil, magnet, galvanometer. Feels like magic.

The device is called a "mirror galvanometer" & it's a way of turning electric impulses into motion using magnetic deflection of ferrous metal.

Think of a round metal plate like a coin hanging from a thread in a magnetic field.

The telegraph signal deflects the coin. Thomson wore a monocle...

It reminded me that I have an antique mirror galvanometer to clean up and get working when I retire in a few years. Needs at least the ground glass scale and a 3V bulb. The old wire insulation probably needs TLC too

Before the multimeter, there was the galvanometer. When Oersted's experiments were published and spread throughout, men from every corner of Europe were trying to capitalize on the discovery. Learn more in this Digikey Retro Electro article on the Galvanometer.

Nice argument. Unfortunately, I have already depicted myself as Thomson's Mirror Galvanometer, and you as Whitehouse's Electromagnetic Steelyard.

William Thomson (a.k.a. Lord Kelvin) died #OnThisDay in 1907. In today's #ScientistOfTheDay post, Bill Ashworth describes how Thomson contributed to the construction of the first transatlantic telegraph cable.

Before there were multimeters, there was the galvanometer. Born from Ørsted’s magnetic needle experiment and refined by Schweigger, Ampère, and Ohm. This is the story of the Galvanometer. #RetroElectro @Digikey

... like this: 🧐. He noticed that when it dangled, it cast crazy reflections around the room.

He put a mirror on the coin, hung the whole thing from a silken thread borrowed from his niece's best dress.

As it moved in response to the signal, it cast a reflection on the wall opposite.

Does anybody here know how I can get my hands on a late 19th century mirrored galvanometer?

... MIRROR GALVANOMETER.

Electrical impulses move a mirror which redirects a laser beam that makes the planetarium come alive with 1970's classic rock music.

So Lord Kelvin invented the laser light show, he just got a bit ahead of the music (& lasers).

Who would have gone to "CANDLE TCHAIKOVSKY"?

Electromagnetism:

On this day in history, 194 years ago, October 28, 1831, Michael Faraday created the first small electrical transformer in his laboratory by winding copper wires around an iron ring and connecting a battery to one wire and a galvanometer to another. (1/4)

like, the further I get into this paper, the more it starts to sound like Sam Altman's been spending years and billions of dollars building hotter and heavier electromagnetic steelyards, and Percepta here has just invented the mirror galvanometer
