Long march: PTI's convoy departs from DI Khan
PESHAWAR/LAKKI MARWAT/DI KHAN: PTI workers and supporters, led by former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, set out from Dera Ismail Khan on Sunday for the party’s long march, which is being carried out to demand the release of jailed party founder and ex-prime minister Imran Khan. Meanwhile, the caravan led by incumbent KP CM Sohail Afridi has yet to begin its trek from Lakki Marwat. Before departing from DI Khan, Gandapur stressed that the protest should remain peaceful and urged the participants to maintain discipline and refrain from violence, vandalism and confrontation with law enforcement personnel. He said the party would follow a policy of “live and let live” during the protest and directed workers not to take the law into their hands. “Those who block roads or engage in confrontation are not our workers,” Gandapur said, asking the participants to remain peaceful throughout the march. > He further urged the participants to avoid any activity that could lead to clashes or damage to public or private property. Describing the march as a continuation of the party’s political struggle, Gandapur said it represented a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to PTI founder Imran. “We have made sacrifices for Imran Khan before and will not hesitate to make further sacrifices,” he said, adding that the party would continue its “peaceful political struggle” for Imran’s release. The convoy, according to Gandapur, would travel through Yarik and Pezu before reaching Gandi Chowk in Lakki Marwat. Meanwhile in the Peshawar-Karachi Highway near Serai Naurang in Gandi Chowk, PTI workers had started gathering on Sunday afternoon to participate in the long march. Strict security measures were in place, with a large police contingent deployed at the site along with armoured personnel carriers and bomb disposal squads. Special Assistant to the KP chief minister for Home and Tribal Affairs Tariq Saad told journalists at his residence that, in accordance with the PTI leadership’s decision, the “peaceful long” march would commence from Gandi Chowk today, with convoys from the southern districts joining it. He said PTI workers from Bannu, DI Khan, Tank, North Waziristan and South Waziristan would gather at Gandi Chowk to participate in the march. “If workers from some southern districts, especially Tank and Waziristan, could not attend the long march today due to law and order-related curfew and other restrictions, they would join the movement on the way to Peshawar the next day,” he said. The PTI’s march, being carried out to demand the release of its jailed founder and ex-prime minister Imran Khan, is the latest bone of contention between the two sides. In August, the PTI announced the long march to Islamabad on Sept 27 against what it called the “illegal imprisonment” of its party founder. However, a couple of days before its scheduled long march, the party postponed the march until Oct 4 (today). Meanwhile, federal ministers have warned that the Centre would have no option but to impose governor’s rule or an emergency in KP, citing the province’s security situation and the protest call, while PTI has warned of dire consequences if such a step was taken. After weekend talks, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has further warned that the protesters will not be allowed to enter Islamabad. ## Plan for the march According to the plan for the march shared by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on X, PTI supporters from the districts of Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, South Waziristan, North Waziristan and Bannu will join the long march from Lakki Marwat’s Gandi Chowk Lakki Marwat on Oct 4. > The caravan will halt for the night near Karak, from where people will depart at 12:30pm the next day and stay overnight near Kohat. Then, at 12pm on Oct 6, protesters from Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, and Orakzai will join the convoy, which will move towards Peshawar and spend the night near Mattani. The caravan will depart from Budh Bair in Peshawar on Oct 7 afternoon. “The remaining constituencies of Peshawar will join us at Kohat Road Bridge and the Motorway Toll Plaza. And we will spend the night near Charsadda Interchange,” the KP CM said. They would then depart the Charsadda Interchange at 12:30pm on Oct 8 after people from Charsadda and Mohmand join them. Refraining from detailing the final leg of the trip to the federal capital, Afridi said the people “of entire KP” would gather at Khairabad on Oct 8 and spend the night there. “God willing, the plan for the next phase will be announced there.” Ahead of the march, movement on several roads on KP has been banned under Section 144. * * * _More to follow_

CM Afridi wants KP input included in counterterror policy
KP CM Sohail Afridi and his predecessor, Ali Amin Gandapur, inquire after those injured in the Darazinda attack.—Dawn DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Sunday called for better cooperation between the provincial and federal governments on security matters, saying the counterterrorism policy should reflect ground realities. The chief minister made these comments during his visit to Dera Ismail Khan to visit the wounded, a day after a deadly bombing targeting a police and customs check-post killed more than 12 people, including rescue officials, in Darazinda. He was received by his predecessor Ali Amin Gandapur, and the two subsequently visited the hospital where the injured were being treated. Addressing the media, Chief Minister Afridi said his government had warned about the deteriorating security situation in the province and added that people, police personnel and soldiers were bearing the brunt of violence. > Afridi visits victims of Dera Ismail Khan attack alongside predecessor Ali Amin Gandapur; urges Centre to involve the province in decision-making, provide resources He said his government provided an additional Rs35 billion to the KP police in the previous financial year for maintaining peace and security. He claimed the province also made payments to federal agencies for the provision of modern weapons, equipment and armoured personnel carriers (APCs), but the required equipment had yet to be delivered. RESIDENTS offer funeral prayers for a blast victim in Lakki Marwat. Terrorists rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a security post, killing at least 11 people.—AFP He demanded that the federal government provide APCs to the province without further delay and said the people of KP should be taken into confidence before making decisions about peace and security. “We are picking up coffins on a daily basis,” the CM said, calling for greater cooperation between the federal and provincial governments on security matters. “Peace cannot be established without taking the people of KP into confidence,” he said, adding that his government did not accept policies formulated behind ‘closed doors’. CM Afridi said that anyone taking up arms against Pakistan was a terrorist and expressed concern over the security situation in KP and Balochistan. He said families of those killed in acts of terrorism would be provided with a martyr package. The chief minister also launched a diatribe against ‘some elements’ in the federal government, accusing them of polarising the country. He said those threatening to impose governor’s rule in KP should go ahead and do it instead of issuing threats. **Officials laid to rest** Meanwhile, Customs official Farman Khan, who embraced martyrdom in the D.I. Khan suicide bombing, was laid to rest in Ghazni Khel in Lakki Marwat district on Sunday. His body was brought to his hometown from D.I. Khan early in the morning. The martyred official was known in the area for patronising and promoting sports and engaging in social and welfare work. The funeral prayers of the slain personnel were offered at the Ejaz Shaheed police lines on Saturday night. Besides Customs Havaldar Farman, Sepoy Osama and Rescue 1122 officials Imtiaz and Sharifullah were among the deceased. Police personnel presented a guard of honour, while officials laid floral wreaths. _Our correspondent in Lakki Marwat also contributed to this report_ _Published in Dawn, September 28th, 2026_

FCC issues notices to KP CM Afridi on estranged PTI leader Marwat's plea against his appointment
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Monday issued notice to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister (CM) Sohail Afridi for the second week of October in a plea challenging his appointment. A three-judge FCC bench, headed by Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan, took up the petition moved by estranged PTI leader Sher Afzal Khan Marwat against the resignation of former KP chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who preceded Afridi. The FCC also summoned Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, under Order 27-A of the Pakistan Code of Civil Procedure, which stipulates that a court must notify the attorney general if it is hearing a case regarding the interpretation of constitutional law. Marwat, who pleaded before the court in person, had filed the petition under Article 175-E of the Constitution — which determines the original jurisdiction of the FCC — seeking a declaration that the resignation letters submitted by Gandapur on Oct 8 and 11, 2025, were made under the unconstitutional dictation of a convicted and disqualified individual and therefore lacked legal volition, rendering them legally ineffective. The petition alleged that the entire process of replacing Gandapur as the KP CM was initiated pursuant to directives issued by jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, who, it claimed, stood convicted and constitutionally disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. The petition argued that a person subject to constitutional disqualification was legally incapacitated from exercising control over state functionaries or issuing binding political directives. The petition requested the FCC to quash and set aside all consequential actions, including the Oct 15, 2025 notification regarding the installation and continuation of Afridi as the chief minister. It further requested the court to restore Gandapur as the CM, declaring his resignation invalid and his de-notification legally ineffective. The petition also sought to restrain all respondents from acting on any political or constitutional directives issued by any disqualified or de-recognised political entity regarding KP’s governance. The petitioner argued that, as an elected representative from KP, he was directly concerned with preserving constitutional governance in the province and said any unconstitutional disruption of Gandapur’s government would undermine the public mandate. The petition raised important questions concerning the independence of high constitutional offices, the legal limitations on disqualified individuals exercising influence over state machinery and the enforcement of Articles 2A, 4, 5, 17, 25, and 130 of the Constitution. “It is an established principle that when the functioning of an entire provincial executive is subverted by external dictation, the rights of the public at large under Articles 9, 17, and 2A are directly infringed, creating an imperative for this honourable court to exercise its constitutional jurisdiction,” the petition argued. It further questioned whether an individual who stood convicted and constitutionally disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 could lawfully issue directives that influence, alter or dismantle elected provincial governance structures. The petition further asked whether instructions from a disqualified individual or defunct political entity have any constitutional validity, arguing that the governor must reject a chief minister’s resignation if it is not voluntary and lacks constitutional legitimacy.

Sher Afzal Marwat moves FCC against Gandapur’s resignation
**• Argues stepping down lacked ‘free will’ and therefore has no legal effect • Seeks cancellation of all actions related to appointment of Sohail Afridi as KP CM** ISLAMABAD: Estranged PTI leader Sher Afzal Khan Marwat on Thursday approached the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) against the resignation of Ali Amin Gandapur, who stepped down as chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on directives allegedly issued by jailed PTI founder Imran Khan. Dispute over security detail fuels new tensions in Khan-led party in Pakistan
Tensions escalated within Pakistan’s ruling party in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the incumbent chief minister and his predecessor clashed over the alleged withdrawal of official security for the former provincial leader. Ali Amin Gandapur, the former chief minister, accused the provincial government of withdrawing the official vehicles and security personnel assigned to him after he left office last year. “Last night, the deputy security officer of incumbent Chief Minister Sohail Afridi instructed the personnel to report to the police lines instead of continuing their duty with me,” Gandapur said. He said he had been provided with a vehicle jammer, a double-cabin pickup truck, and a team of 14 security personnel by the provincial government during his tenure. “The personnel informed me and were let go without any explanation,” he said. However, Gandapur later said he had declined any reinstatement of his security detail, describing it as unnecessary. “I have informed Afridi that I will not be taking back the personnel, even if they are offered,” he said. The office of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi denied the allegations, saying no decision had been taken to withdraw Gandapur’s security and that no such instructions had been issued to relevant authorities. ### Widening rifts Afridi was elected chief minister on Oct. 13 last year following a directive from Imran Khan, the jailed former prime minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI. Afridi replaced Gandapur in the post. Since then, tensions between the two leaders have deepened. Gandapur had been largely absent from PTI political activities until last week’s sit-ins organized by the party to demand comprehensive medical treatment for Khan’s deteriorating eye condition. Lehaz Ali, a senior political journalist, told Nukta that PTI is divided into four provincial factions led by Gandapur, Atif Khan, Murad Saeed, and Taimur Jharga. At the national level, he said, two main camps are aligned with Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and his sister, Aleema Khan. “The current tension between Gandapur and Afridi stems from the chief ministership, with Gandapur believing he was ousted due to a powerful lobby led by Aleema Khan and Murad Saeed, which supported Afridi’s appointment,” Ali said. He said such internal divisions are likely to deepen, potentially undermining efforts to secure Khan’s release. According to Ali, the conflict could be resolved only by Khan himself, who he said has historically managed competing interests within the party. PTI’s leadership believes a negotiated understanding with Pakistan’s powerful military establishment may be necessary to secure Khan’s freedom. “All PTI leaders are positioning themselves strategically, in the name of securing Khan’s release,” Ali said.

Ex-KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur’s security detail withdrawn; govt denies issuing orders
DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The security detail provided to former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur has been withdrawn, it emerged on Tuesday. It is worth mentioning that while the security detail from Peshawar was withdrawn, the ex-CM has a police detail from his native Dera Ismail Khan district. It was not immediately clear who ordered the withdrawal of the security from Peshawar, with incumbent chief minister Sohail Afridi’s press secretary denying that orders to this effect were issued. According to the sources, a 16-member security squad assigned to Gandapur was recalled late last night. The contingent comprised two jammer operators, eight gunmen and six drivers, who had been working in shifts. All personnel belonged to the police department. Of them, 14 officials had been deployed for Gandapur’s security, while two were assigned to his brother, MNA Faisal Amin Gandapur. Sources close to the ex-chief minister said that one jammer and one pickup carrier had been returned to the provincial government. The sources said that Gandapur and his brother had personally spoken with the officer who had conveyed KP CM Afridi’s orders to confirm and authenticate the withdrawal of the police escort. In a statement, Gandapur said that at 11pm last night, Afridi’s deputy chief security officer (CSO) called his security personnel, saying that it was the CSO’s order to withdraw the security. “I had one jammer and one double-cabin vehicle provided by the provincial government,” he said, adding, “There were 14 personnel deployed with that vehicle.” “When these personnel informed me, I told them to pack up everything. This is the actual truth,” he said. He stated that even if this security were now restored, he would not accept it. “I want to tell the chief minister that there is no need to return this security to me now. I do not need it,” Gandapur said. Gandapur’s spokesperson, Faraz Ahmed Mughal, insisted that the withdrawal was initiated on the instructions of KP CM Afridi. He said the Chief Minister’s Office contacted the security in-charge and directed that the detail be withdrawn, adding that Gandapur followed the directives within minutes. Meanwhile, in a statement, the KP chief minister’s press secretary said that there was no truth in reports about Gandapur’s security detail being withdrawn by Afridi. “No such decision has been taken, nor have any instructions been issued to the relevant authorities in this regard,” he said. Further, an official at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat said that Gandapur was asked to return two jammers and the associated An official at the CM Secretariat clarified that the former CM was asked to return two jammers and the associated personnel, which were required for the use of the incumbent chief minister. “Under the rules, the former chief minister was not entitled to retain the jammers. He was supposed to return the jammers and vehicle”, the official said, insisting that no security detail had been withdrawn from Gandapur. “He continues to retain police escort”, the official maintained. Gandapur had previously faced multiple security threats, and a hand grenade attack also took place at his residence in the past. Official sources maintained that decisions regarding security deployment and withdrawal were made in accordance with threat assessments and administrative requirements. Political observers said that the development was also significant in the context of the recent differences between Gandapur and CM Afridi.

Islamabad court indicts former KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur in audio leaks case
ISLAMABAD: The prolonged legal saga surrounding the audio leak case involving PTI leader and former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, finally moved to the next stage on Saturday with an additional district and sessions judge indicting him and his co-accused. Additional District and Sessions Judge Nasr Minallah Baloch conducted the proceedings. Gandapur, accompanied by his counsel, Advocate Raja Zahoorul Hassan, appeared before the court, along with his co-accused, Asad Farooq Khan. At the outset of the hearing, the judge addressed the core issue that had stalled the proceedings: the repeated failure of the accused to appear. The court enquired why he had not been presenting himself before the law. Responding to the court’s query, Gandapur cited serious security concerns and logistical hurdles for his absence. “Due to the security situation and road closures, I could not appear,” the former chief minister explained, adding that there was a prevailing situation akin to a curfew in certain areas, which prevented his travel. He also informed the judge that his mobile phone had been taken during raids at his premises. Judge Nasr, while taking note of the explanation, reminded the accused that discretion regarding appearance lies with the court. He emphasised that a conviction or punishment cannot be based merely on the prosecution’s request, and pointed out that the case had been lingering for a considerable period without a formal indictment being filed. In a significant move, the defence counsel rose to request the formal cancellation of his client’s arrest warrants, arguing that since the accused had now appeared, the court possessed the full authority to rescind them. The judge accepted the request, suspending the arrest warrants for Gandapur. However, he issued a clear warning: “The warrants are cancelled, but in the future, you must be careful and ensure your appearance in court.” The judge also advised that, should similar unavoidable situations arise again, the proper legal channel would be to file an application for exemption from personal appearance beforehand. Following the resolution of the warrant issue, the court formally terminated the proceedings initiated by publishing an advertisement for the absconding suspect. Subsequently, the judge read out the charges and formally indicted both Ali Amin Gandapur and Asad Farooq Khan in the audio leak case. Both accused were present in the dock as the charges were framed against them. After the indictment, the court adjourned the hearing of the case until April 6. Earlier on February 9, a court in Islamabad declared Gandapur a proclaimed offender due to his continued absence from court hearings in a liquor and arms recovery _case_. Arrest warrants have been issued for Gandapur in the case multiple times since over his non-appearance, including on _October 5, 2024_, _September 4, 2024_, _July 19, 2025_ and _Sept 10, 2025_.

Omar Ayub, Ali Amin Gandapur declared absconders in ‘Haqeeqi Azadi March’ case
ISLAMABAD: A judicial magistrate on Monday declared two PTI leaders — former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur and ex-National Assembly opposition leader Omar Ayub — absconders in two case pertaining to the party’s 2022 ‘ _Haqeeqi Azadi March_ ’. The march is one of several protests that the party has carried out following the ouster of PTI founder Imran Khan as the prime minister through a no-confidence vote in 2022. Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Hassan Chishti heard the two cases related to the protest, registered at Islamabad’s Bara Kahu police station, declaring Ayub and Gandapur absconders and issuing their perpetual arrest warrants over their persistent absence from hearings. Judge Chishti observed that the two had failed to appear before the court despite the issuance of summons multiple times. They also did not furnish any plausible justification for their absence, the judge noted. They were summoned several times, but they continued to evade the proceedings, the judge remarked. Making these observations, he declared both PTI leaders absconders and directed the issuance of permanent arrest warrants for them so that they are presented before the court. Over Gandapur and Ayub’s persistent absence from the proceedings, the court had formalised their status as proclaimed offenders at a previous hearing. Meanwhile, the court had acquitted several others accused in the case, including PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Zartaj Gul, in the two cases on the basis of insufficient evidence to establish their involvement in the allegations levelled by the police. According to the prosecution, the two cases were registered in connection with alleged violations of law and order during the ‘ _Haqeeqi Azadi March_ ’, with police claiming that the accused had incited people to commit unlawful activities and obstructed officials from performing their duties. The defence, however, had consistently maintained that the cases were politically motivated.
