oh my god imagine

you know who else would have been a great poster? Elizabeth Gaskell

Cranford is basically neighborposting turned into a book

which makes me think of E. F. Benson's Lucia and Mapp books, and he would also have been a tremendous poster

Author Elizabeth Gaskell was born 216 years ago today. You might love her best for North and South and Cranford, but for me I'll always lean towards Mary Barton (1848) and its realistic look at romance among grinding poverty and social upheaval.

Elizabeth Gaskell really said, books are cake for the brain, and frankly, I see no reason to improve upon that philosophy. 📚🍰

Mrs. Gaskell, as she is known, also wrote "The Life of Charlotte Bronte," which was the first biography of the writer. Gaskell intentionally left out the salacious bits of Bronte’s life to focus on her more upright behavior.

It is the birthday, in 1810, of English novelist and biographer Elizabeth Gaskell.

She wrote what are known as “society” novels, about the roles of women and the laws and customs that drew so many bright lines around their opportunities.

29 September 1810 Elizabeth Gaskell was born. Her novels covered tension between workers and employers in industrial Manchester. She enjoyed travel, socialising, food. On evenings out in Paris she would ‘make a buzz of talk, look at fine dresses, and I come home hungry as a hawk about one am’.
