Consequently, the retail space has been concepted as an architectural interpretation of transit as a spatial condition. As such, the GATE31 store aims to offer shoppers different experiences—a space for pause, choice, transition and a new experience. Additionally, the airport ‘theme’ is transformed into a unified architectural sculpture which emphasises smooth movement and creates a continuous white landscape where every element is part of one coherent system that evokes the notion of being in transit. Some objects have a more sculptural character, such as metal rails supported by amorphous disc-like bases, while other elements draw inspiration from aircraft wings, ship interiors and baggage conveyor belts. Interestingly, the abundant abstraction is counterbalanced by mundane elements, such as original airplane seats, reupholstered in rich bouclé fabric, which can be found in are separate lounge areas, paired with porthole-shaped screens showing scenes of moving skies.
