Ya if you're a pro business traveller you pack everything in your carry-on so you don't ever have to wait at baggage claim (and have the appropriate airline status level to guarantee you never board so late as to not be able to stow your bag and have to gatecheck it) bsky.app/profile/pete...

Ive been stuffing my head in a ski boot bag and throwing her up in the overhead bin for 10+ years now no problem, no breaks.
For the most part you want to be on a plane early enough to get bin space
Also tell them you have a lithium battery in it and dont let them gatecheck lol ive told that lie

It is reasonable to not check a bag at all, and keep it to what you’re allowed to bring on the plane. It is sensible to gatecheck anything they’ll let you, once you have checked a bag, because you’re going to baggage claim anyway. Many infrequent flyers are not reasonable.

When Air Canada didnt charge for carry-on, I was happy to do a gate check if asked, so not to have to rush on the plane to get overhead space. But now they charge, so no, I will not take your ‘free’ gatecheck offer, unless you also reimburse me for my carry-on luggage payment on the ticket price

But yeah it's dumb too that planeside gatecheck isn't a thing anymore that I can tell? If I have a longass layover I do not want to check my rollybag to my final destination because I want the stuff in it when I have to sit for five hours.

Woke up late, fumbled my boarding pass. Took my laptop out of my bag when I didn't have to. Jogged to my gate. Already started boarding. Overhead full and had to gatecheck. Didn't eat breakfast. Forgot my steam deck. Disaster trip already.
