Violets (viola blanda), fleabane (erigeron pulchellus) and trillium (cuneatum), O My! Iris (cristata), sedum (ternatum) and pussytoes (antennaria neglecta), with a little carex (pennsylvanica) thrown in for funsies. The veratrums are only *just* starting to poke their heads above the soil.

Campanula americana / Campanulastrum americanum (so pretty they named it twice!) is cooking this year!

“Tall bellflower” does not do this beauty justice.

Flowering raceme of a Melanthium virginicum: an 8" branched spike of small, six-pointed, star-shaped white flowers with subtle yellow coloring towards the base of each petal. The petals narrow towards the base before they join the bract, creating an especially airy effect. The raceme flowers from the base, with some upper-end blossoms still closed.

Heracleum maximum. Very tall plant with huge, deeply dissected leaves that have jagged edges, topped with a wide umbel of white flowers. Hard to tell with this view, but the one pictured is 7+ feet tall.

I can't stop myself, becausevsome of these beauties are not long for the world:

1) Erythronium "White Beauty" (or possibly a very pale "Kondo"). I love Erythronium, they're so delicate, so tough, and so ephemeral.

2) Arabis alpina: weedy and beautiful.

Erythronium "White Beauty" (or maybe Kondo? I forget, but Kondo is usually a deeper yellow). Mottled, luxurious leaves, delicate stems and beautiful nodding cream/white flowers. They come, flicker delicately in the spring sun, and disappear entirely for the rest of the year. There are leaves from a Delphinium tricorne visible in the foreground; that little beauty will be a subject for another day (soon, the flowering spikes are looking rather turgid...).

Still #springtime in this 🌱garden🌱!

1) Magnolia x "Black Tulip." You get 0 guesses where its name comes from.
2) The pink dogwood's getting ready to GO HOG this year.
3) Phlox nana "Perfect Pink"

Magnolia x "Black Tulip" has huge, deep pink flowers that are shaped like, well, bigass tulips. On the ground you can just about make out some Heuchera (americana or longiflora, I cannot remember which), and a whole bunch of dead leaves from the oak in the parkway. Burgeoning flowers of a Cornus florida. This one flowers pink, but the flowers start out deep red. Phlox nana are great little evergreen creepers with spiky foliage and intense little flowers. This one is "Perfect Pink" and that just about perfectly describes its flowers. Viola walteri: silvery green leaves and delicate violet flowers. Why don't people grow these more? I don't get it.

🌱Spring has splattered itself all over the garden this week. These are a few of my personal high points from the spring selection.🌱

1) Trillium! TRILLIUM!
2) Uvularia perfoliata!
3) Antennaria neglecta (Pussytoes)!

Two trillium in the foreground, more trillium and a Delphinium tricorne in the background (and probably some other stuff). There are a whole lot of species of trillium in this patch (I have a problem, please don't send help, I'm OK with it) so I'm not going to try to tease them out. ANYways, these three (two in the foreground, one real blurry in the back) are all white flowering species. Uvularia perfoliata (I *think* - easier to tell after the flowering period wraps up but some of those leaves look pretty perforated). Dainty green plants with stems that "perforate" the leaves, with dainty, dangly yellow flowers). Antennaria (in this case, neglecta, their species are legion) are a weird and wonderful little garden plant and don't let any mook who likes uniform lawns tell you otherwise. Silvery evergreen foliage? Clumpy little springtime flowers? Spread like the dickens and impossible to kill? PERFECT. Oh, and you can just barely see some Phlox nana ("Perfect Pink") in the background. Better photo of that one to come. Viola sororia var. rubra: it's a common (native) violet with fancy makeup on (they are lightish red-purple instead of the usual ... well, violet). Great little woodland (or not woodland, they're tough as balls) plant.
