Started Anne of Geierstein last night and Scott really does love a good landscape.

Ok Anne of Geierstein is finally picking up. They just had to get abducted by an evil German.

My OH is excellent at finding ‘traditional’ wedding anniversary gifts. 24 years today, so a little opal cat was waiting for me in the spot I normally have breakfast. I love opal but knew there was some bad feeling about it, so I looked it up and was reminded of the power of popular fiction.

Opals are the birthstone for October / "misfortune but hope"

the mineralogist George Kunz thinks that opals got a bad rap because of 1829 gothic novel Anne of Geierstein (quoted below)

source for this info is this lovely page from the Gems Fandom, love to see it: www.gemsociety.org/article/hist...

Quentin Durward; Waverley; Kenilworth; St Ronan’s Well; The Abbot; The Monastery; Heart of Midlothian; Anne of Geierstein (sp?); Bride of Lammermoor; Old Mortality; count Robert of Paris; The Surgeon’s Daughter; Castle Dangerous; The Fortunes of Nigel … all in teeny tiny print

Ooh yeah opals are considered bad luck now by some, due to a gothic novel in the 18th century called Anne of Geierstein! But I love them. My mums engagement ring was opals, mine is too!

>> drops of holy water struck her opal, which "shot out a brilliant spark like a *falling star*, and became the instant afterwards lightless and colorless as a *common pebble*." Hermione then *collapsed*. Two hours later, all that remained of her was a handful of gray ashes.

Finished Anne of Geierstein last night and, much like Rob Roy, the titular character is almost entirely absent from the novel.

Currently Scott’s Anne of Geierstein

Finished Jackson’s The Two Unions last night. Now I’m torn between starting Colin Barrett’s Wild Houses, Caoilinn Hughes’s The Alternatives, and Walter Scott’s Anne of Geierstein

That's just one metaphor of many that have been proposed and is probably the most easily accessible one. As with all of Poe's stories, there's so much more going on under the surface. The name Arnheim may have come from Walter Scott's Anne of Geierstein www.eapoe.org/works/mabbot... 🧵
