#genotypes
A reminder: for genotypes to produce phenotypes, they have to go through development

So there's this idea again to just let H5N1 rip through the US chicken population to find and breed resistant genotypes.

There are no resistant genotypes. Modern farmed chicken are all direct descendants of very few optimized breeding lines and because of that are genetically extremely homogenous.

A new report describes two new genotypes of H5N6 recently isolated in China, with one carrying the internal genes from LPAI H9N2 demonstrating worrisome signs of mammalian adaptation.

The tech bro fascination with eugenics is so on brand. The idea that you could make accurate, actionable predictions from individual genotypes (with all their complex, non-linear interactions) from averaged, linearly modeled population-level genomic statistics is just another big data fantasy

So, not COVID related BUT, this is REALLY exciting news. Phase I/II data shows Moderna’s Norovirus vaccine candidate mRNA-1403, has shown early signs of efficacy AND elicited robust serum HBGA-blocking antibody responses against ALL THREE NoV genotypes. Let’s talk about that! 🧪🧵⬇️

“Let’s just let chestnut blight rip through the chestnut population so we can find and breed resistant genotypes.”

[50 years later]

“Well, shit.”

I see we’re doing deextinction discourse again, I’ll bite!

Genotypes (DNA variation) alone do not make a phenotype (how bodies look, function, behave).

Even if we reproduced an extinct genome, that animal doesn’t necessarily have the developmental context and learned culture of the extinct species
It's not a dire wolf. It's a gray wolf clone with 20 dire-wolf gene edits, and with some dire wolf traits. And here's my story! Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/s...

BREAKING: A new swine flu strain, H1avN2#, has rapidly spread across pig farms in France, causing more severe illness.

This highly mutated strain is evading existing immunity and has led to the emergence of five new genotypes.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is widespread in sika deer in China: a survey of 466 faecal samples from four provinces found a 44.4% prevalence and 11 genotypes, including two novel genotypes.

BEB6 was the predominant genotype.🧪

Phenomics reminder; 1,000,000 traits on 100 genotypes is still only 100 genotypes.

The leucovorin story is already blending with existing misinformation online about folic acid and MTHFR genotypes to create a new generation of medicalized claims without much evidence.

That's strange, just upthread you were saying that trans girls who hadn't gone through male puberty would be eligible to play girls' sports, but now you're checking their genotypes

This is the same bullshit as “sex is in every cell of the body”.

Genotypes are not a more accurate representation of phenotypes than phenotypes themselves
But my whole point is that this demonstrates how absolutely ridiculous of a scientific and biological proposition this understanding of sex is.

Somehow no amount of her womanhood and female experience counts anymore because of a DNA test? Bullshit!

This paper is making the rounds again!

Exciting update is we just got some funding to study caterpillar performance on local and nonlocal ecotypes! (Plant genotypes adapted to other ecoregions).

Stay tuned for more caterpillar pictures this summer! 🐛

Although they are the same subtype, the flu A H1N1 and H3N2 are actually a lot of different viruses. Within each subtype are many different genotypes. Flu is an RNA virus that acquires mutations as it spreads through host populations. Flu viruses are very diverse.
