This feels very Gentlebeard. Ed: "is that a parrot in your pants or are you just happy to see me?" 😘 Stede: "oh yes, it's my daughter's foster parrot, how did you know?" Ed: .....

Re-posting this little SMAU in these trying times:

"That's What Friends Are For"
T-rated, Gentlebeard #OFMDfic
A WhatsApp text chain. It is viewed from Ed’s phone. The contact texting him is “Stede [dancing hearts emoji] the profile picture is Stede looking at the camera with an expression of great joy, a brown goat next to him. Stede: Hey Ed. It’s me, Stede, your best friend. Ed: Dafuq?! I know who you are! You think I already deleted your number? Stede: Not really. It’s just, that it’s been a while since we’ve done any best friends things. So I thought we could kind of catch up on that. Ed: Catch up? Stede: Yes. Remember, how you always used to text me to complain, when the guys you were dating were being dicks to you? I had a feeling you could use that right now. Ed: Whatever gave you that idea? [eyeroll emoji] Stede: Just a hunch.

🩵 Troubled Thoughts 💜

#OFMD #gentlebeard #fanfic

• rated teen for swearing
• post-season one finale
• emotional hurt/comfort

After reconciling, Stede is trying to sleep but can't stop the guilty thoughts swirling around in his mind, so he wakes Ed up to apologise again for his actions.
"Hey, Ed? Are you awake?" Stede gently propped himself up on an elbow as he whispered into the silence of the night, nothing but the sound of soft waves crashing behind his words. Ed let out a throaty hum in response, eyes shut as he lay on his back, one leg up, hands resting on his chest. "I uh, I just wanted to apologise again." Stede continued, looking down as he placed a hand over one of Ed's, a sullen look on his face. "I was a fool to leave you the way I did. I could have gone back to meet you at the dock, but I let my fear win." "I know." Ed replied, opening his eyes to stare at the moonlit ceiling. "You—" He began to speak again but stopped, pursing his lips as his brow furrowed. Stede swallowed hard, wondering if he had stuffed things up again. "I'm sorry, I'll just—" He spoke softly as he began to get himself up, ready to run away once more. Ed quickly turned towards Stede, wrapping his arms around him as he rushed to ease the gentleman's mind and body. "I didn't mean to upset you, Bon'." He said, voice shaky and muffled in the fabric of Stede's night shirt. "Just... don't know what to say sometimes." After a moment of shock, Stede reciprocated, holding onto Ed for dear life, fingers pressed a little too firmly into his back. "Thank you." Ed kissed the side of his head, as if trying to quell the troubled thoughts swirling inside. "You're okay, I promise." Ed lovingly nuzzled the man's neck, his stubble eliciting a soft shiver from Stede. "Besides, we both fucked up, remember?" ...I was the reason you fucked up, though." Ed moved back to look him dead in the eye, hands on Stede's shoulders, face stern. "No." His face quickly softened as he studied the worry on his lover's face. "Look, Izzy's the one who pushed me to the edge, not you." Stede simply sighed, breaking eye contact to look up at the painting. "I... can't convince my mind to believe that, Ed." He swallowed, looking back at the fearsome pirate, who responded with a loving kiss. "Trust me, I was coping okay before he screamed his fuckin' head off." He growled the last few words as he gestured vaguely towards the angry dickhead's sleeping quarters. Stede smiled softly in response, squeezing the man's thigh reassuringly. "...You're not alone, though." He sighed, taking Stede's hand in his as he laid down again, looking up at him with half-lidded eyes. "Before? When I went quiet?" He questioned, taking a deep breath as the blond hummed in response. "I had to stop myself from telling you you were right to leave me." He admitted, voice dark and shaky as he looked out the window, eyes following the gentle waves of the ocean as he felt his eyes begin to match its wetness. "Oh Ed..." Stede looked at him, face full of sadness and worry as he let go of Ed's hand, instead placing his own against his lover's warm face, lovingly brushing his thumb against the rugged skin beneath. "Yeah..." The greying man breathed, and after a quick moment a soft knowing smile spread as he drank in the softness of the gentleman's hand, sighing contentedly as he brushed his rough knuckle against it. "The thoughts are hard to deal with sometimes," he paused to look at Stede, the smile widening, "but you prove them wrong every day." Stede smiled back before plopping himself down next to Ed, the bed squeaking as he snuggled up close, noses touching as they stared into each other's eyes. "I'll always be here." Ed lightly kissed the blond man's nose as he wrapped his arms around him once more. "I love you, Stede." "I love you too, Edward."

I’ve been posting Ed’s World chapters every Sunday but this week I decided to contribute to the upcoming AO3-outage zine instead. BUT! My scrapped first attempt (a modern AU, kinda #WeeCon related, #Gentlebeard first encounter) still needs a home (uh, and an ending), so may end up here as a Skyfic👀

Art of Ed and Stede from our flag means death. Ed is dressed as a vampire, and Stede is dressed as a playgirl bunny. They’re glancing at each other across a crowded room full of people in costume, with purple and orange lighting, and banners of skulls and pumpkins

David Jenkins’s SMAU
[which I’ve been calling “The Manuscript” so I can find it quickly]:

1775. An editor comes into work on Christmas eve to find a manuscript on his desk. The title: A HISTORY OF PYRATES by Charles Johnson. (We have no budget so we’ll say the editor is played by Michael Stuhlbarg).

I mean, I WAS going to write a Halloween #OFMD Modern Gentlebeard where Stede hands out chocolate coins with far too much enthusiasm, Zheng lowkey wants to kill him while cosplaying with Olu as Morticia and Gomez Addams and later there were topless bed cuddles. Raincheck!

"Doing The Beeps Yourself"
A Gentlebeard soulmate AU with a super silly premise but a decent amount of seriousness thrown in.

I won’t be on here, instagram, TikTok, facebook, or discord starting November 1 until December 1. AO3 going down is not going to make this easy(where do I get my Gentlebeard fic? 😭). But hey, I have felt social media sucking the life out of me. I knew it was time to step away for a bit.
In black and white text on a blue and purple background. “I am stepping away from social media for the month of November. See you in December 👋” WeirdoCorner logo. An eyeball with legs and arms. “Be weird. Be kind. spread smiles” written above and below eyeball.

I love this fic so much, I'm so happy @lyratalise.bsky.social asked me to make this art for the final chapter 🥹 💜

Go read it now, if you haven't yet!

#ofmdfanart #ofmd #ourflagmeansdeath #gentlebeard
Digital illustration by Sailor’s Ruin. The art is of Ed hiding in Stede's copper tub under Stede's beloved golden banyan. Ed appears very upset. Stede is in a dark blue suit and is kneeling next to Ed while pleading with him. Behind the bath is a tile wall, and the bathroom door is open on Stede's cabin, where the edge of his fireplace and chairs can be seen. The bathroom has wood cabinetry and plants.
