In that respect, at least, it’s doing much better than the critically endangered Asaphodes frivola, a Geometrid with flightless females, and now found in just two remaining coastal sites near Invercargill. The large site is 25 m2. blog.doc.govt.nz/2014/10/21/l...
The mystery of the little brown moth |
A key to the conservation of our nationally endangered little brown moth is determining its host plant and habitat requirements. Brian Patrick is working towards solving the mystery.

sometimes you take a photo of a geometrid caterpillar that was munching on your sea buckthorn to try to get an id and you end up with something potentially titled «Staring into the Abbys»

The Geometrid Moth is far stranger than it lets on

Their caterpillars are the inchworms, which have lost most of their middle legs and travel by looping the body into an arch, and many can hold themselves out stiff and still from a twig so convincingly that they pass for one.

A geometrid caterpillar spotted by Eoin Warner in our rainforest on Sunday, more than likely a peppered moth adopting a rigid twig posture for camouflage.

They also change colour to mimic the twig. Amazingly, this is thought to be via what's called 'dermal photoreception': seeing with their skin!

I've been trying to grow Weld in my garden this year. First slugs devoured them, then some Geometrid larvae, and now Small White larvae are shredding them. Although the sources I've looked at so far don't mention Weld, it is related to Mignonette which is a known food plant.

This geometrid caterpillar looks so much as a twig that even iNaturalist's amazing AI identified it as a Fraxinus (ash) species! A different angle gives it away though :)

August is the month of Ennomos thorns: August, Canary-shouldered, September and this one - Dusky Thorn, our most common and linked to the local Ash trees.

Ennomos: from an orderly taxonomic position. It’s a solid geometrid.

fuscantaria: from the Latin for becoming dusky or darker.

Not sure which species of Geometrid moth this little fella is but it was very active on Water Pepper. Wouldn’t have thought the leaves were easily palatable

Good Monday morning. It's now 6:48 a.m., 66°F, with a gray overcast sky.
My daily post today, from my "Moths" phone files is a single photo of Dyspteris abortivaria, or the Bad-wing that is a species of geometrid moth.

Until recently, only two specimens of Axiodes insciata — an emerald-green geometrid moth — existed in the world, both collected in 1875 and held at the Natural History Museum in London.

Ooh I think it’s a Wavy Lined Emerald Moth caterpillar! I also saw one of these guys on a Black-Eyed Susan a couple summers back and did a bananas amount of research www.minnesotaseasons.com/Insects/wavy... They stick parts of flowers to their bodies as camouflage. So cool!
Wavy-lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata) — Minnesota Seasons
Wavy-lined emerald is a small geometrid moth with pale green wings crossed by wavy white lines, distinct for its caterpillars camouflaging with flower petals.
