OK, time for a #geonerd shot! This is a great example of stromatolites in the Neoproterozoic ~750 Ma Chuar Group in the #GrandCanyon. Stromatolites are preserved ancient algal mats.

Sarcasm: Well everyone knows that to compete globally in the 21st century you want to *cut* people that support the service branch that floats on 70% of the surface of the earth. #geonerd

2” piping features in the Navajo Sandstone #GCNRA

Silly me: they look like tree trunks for elves!

#Geonerd me: They formed as burrows in tidal flats or from soft-sediment deformation with liquefaction & fluidization ancientshore.com/2013/08/05/i... & www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I’m a longtime member of The Geonerd Club! 💖 The hardcover design of my memoir was based on rocks I collected as a boy. Other designs were based on lapis lazuli and malachite. We went with something more akin to jasper (which figures into an early chapter.)

Perfect winter holiday gift for the geonerd in your life (including yourself 😆)
🌋🤧
Fair warning! The listings for my latest batch of 3D-Printed scale model volcano tissue box covers will go live tomorrow morning (Thursday) around 8am PDT. I think I counted 27 are available this time. A decent variety from which to choose! Will pack this weekend and ship Mon.

Big shoutout to @geosociety.bsky.social for upping the ribbons game at the GSA meeting with an impressive variety of geonerd-themed ribbons available for attaching to our badges. 🧪🪨⚒️🤣

Silly me: does anyone see a dog face with a Santa hat? 😆

#Geonerd me: red swirls formed when water moved through the sandstone while buried. The acidic water dissolved the iron which precipitated around grains when water chemistry changed. Pre-cursors to Moki Balls geology.utah.gov/map-pub/surv...

Touring the Central Coast with ex-roomie and his other guest, AEG’s Jahns lecturer for this year. Ending up at a winery. Tomorrow a Parkfield trip. It’s a hardcore geonerd couple of days.

While scootching around the Interwebs this morning looking for fresh geopetal imagery, I learned of the company "Geopetal Fabric," which makes astoundingly cool geonerd apparel. I just bought this one:

Another magnificent exhibit at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA.

The oils rendered by Drie Chapek have a subtext of flowing streams and little waterfalls, while the other pieces definitely appeal to my geonerd side.

Broken Earth appeals to my inner geonerd, but really liked the characters in Inheritance trilogy a tiny bit more.

Another trilogy I got into just as much was Katherine Arden’s Winternight. Not only for the story, but appreciated learning about Slavic folklore and Rus’ society under Mongol rule.

As a geonerd, there's nothing particularly unusual about a smaller-than-expected tsunami. A lot of factors have to fall into place to get a really big one.

When we’re hiking, my wife will be looking up at the trees asking, “isn’t that pretty?”

To which I answer yes, but I’m looking down at the rocks.

So she got me this shirt.

As a geonerd, that really cheeses me off to see grown *barkbark* men destroying millions of years of nature making a cool natural spot for everyone to enjoy, for what? *bark* and giggles? Jerks.

I told my geonerd friends and one snorted and told me to let you know there are no ‘regular ass rocks’. Lol. Excitable bunch.

We were recently watching a travel video about driving the loop around Iceland, and it definitely piqued my inner geonerd.
