Portrait of a Woman by George Spencer Watson - Oil on canvas / By 1932 - Royal Academy of Arts (London, England) #womeninart #portrait #art #oilpainting #GeorgeSpencerWatson #RoyalAcademy #fineart #watson #EnglishArtist #portraitofawoman #womensart #beauty #EnglishArt #bskyart #RoyalAcademyofArts
This captivating and atmospheric oil painting by British artist George Spencer Watson was completed by 1932; however, the exact date is unknown. Also unknown is the identity of the beautiful focal point which occupies most of the canvas. She is seated in a dark wooden chair in front of a dark and moody dimly interior with all the lighting focused directly on her bare pale skin and youthful beauty. Her expression is serious and somewhat reserved with a gaze from rouge-accented eyes directed slightly downward to her right. She's wearing a low-cut sleeveless pale seafoam-green light summer dress with white straps. Her dark brown hair is loose with slightly wavy buns on the sides. A delicate dual-strand pearl necklace rests on her collarbone while a subtle band is visible on her right ring finger. Her hands are clasped together in her lap hold a royal blue bag. Watson uses realistic techniques to capture the subject's likeness and the texture of her skin and clothing. The brushstrokes are visible, contributing to the painting's textural quality. The dark background contrasts dramatically with the lighter tones of the woman's skin and dress, completely drawing our attention to the unknown woman. The artist came from the late romantic school, but sometimes worked in the style of the Italian Renaissance. His studies at the Royal Academy Schools earned medals and election into the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1900, Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP) in 1904, Associate of the Royal Academy in 1923, and a Member of the Royal Academy (RA) in 1932 -- when this painting was already completed. He passed away, just two years later.
