Herschel in 1781: I shall call this new planet Georgium Sidus, after our exalted monarch, King George III

U.S.A. in 2026: despite the specific origins of our republic, what if we had a shockingly similar political environment?

William Herschel originally named the planet Uranus Georgium Sidus in honor of George III. The name didn't stick, but shortly afterward the king named him Astronomer Royal. Only because of his scientific work, of course. Nothing else.

the biggest mistake you can make is to play a song for a friend and expect them to love the lyrics as much as you do. there you are, blinking back tears, while your friend is hoping that an airplane hits your house so they don’t have to listen to this lugubrious shit

William Herschel. Good guy with a telescope, not so much
with the lingo: he called his discovery “Georgium Sidus”
or “Georgian Star” after George III, but the name didn’t stick.

Among my collection of Herscheliana is a Wedgwood jasperware portrait of William Herschel, with Saturn and Georgium Sidus orbiting above. (What’s your favorite portrait of an astronomer?)

Herschel's name was "Georgium Sidus." (It sounds better in Latin.)

Herschel's proposed name was "Georgium Sidus." Sounds more Latin, but it means "George's Star," and of course a planet isn't a star.

"Georgium Sidus" in the wild!!!

This whole thing is amazing.

As a side note - newly discovered uranium was given its name in support of Bode's idea and against Georgium Sidus. So if Bode had gotten his Roman gods right, we'd have an element called "caelium", and be talking about "caelium bombs", "transcaelic elements", etc :)

It's the way it is because Le Verrier didn't bother to learn anything about Roman mythology, and just assumed that the Roman version of the Greek Ouranos was named "Uranus".

At least it's better than some of the names under consideration. Herschel wanted "Georgium Sidus" after King George III :Þ

Thankfully not George. But almost King George, Georgium or The Georgium Sidus.

“Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam:

Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Georgium Marium Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Bergoglio

qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum.”

I remember thinking then how amazing it was to have lived to see a South American pope

and now two

Does it take a powerful 'scope to see Georgium Sidus, or could it be seen with, say, binoculars?

Amazing. I had no idea, but “Herschel decided to name the object Georgium Sidus (George’s Star), or the ‘Georgian Planet’, in honour of his new patron, King George III” (Wikipedia)
My favourite Uranus fact is that, funny as its name is, its first name was George
In bonus anniversary news today, it’s the 245th anniversary of William Herschel spotting an object up in space which was eventually confirmed as a new planet, and – to the delight of schoolchildren everywhere – given the name Uranus

Maybe Georgium Sidus wasn't such a bad name after all
