As always, Gershom is essential reading (this time on a particularly appropriate week for people named Gershom)
The hostage-ceasefire deal brings half a measure of relief, a quarter of a measure of hope, and no measure of celebration.
Yes, better this deal than no deal or waiting for more people on each side to die.
No, this is not closure.

"Nonsense is nonsense, but the history of nonsense is scholarship."

Professor Saul Lieberman, allegedly, on the occasion of a lecture given by the great Kabbalah scholar (the first to apply academic study to it) Gershom Sholem.

“Shtus (nonsense, folly) is shtus, but the academic study of shtus is scholarship."

-Talmud scholar Saul Lieberman introducing Kabbalah scholar Gershom Scholem before a 1957 lecture at the Jewish Theological Seminary

(whatever you do or don't think of Kabbalah you gotta admit this is hilarious)

"It's 3 am, Shlumey, what are you doing in the beis medresh"
"Trying to find a way to overturn the takkanah of Rabbeinu Gershom!"
"The takkanah of Rabbeinu Gershom!? Why?"
"We can't survive on a single income anymore"
Even woman as sole provider sucks a lot.

That's Gershom Scholem's argument... that the conclusion that Jewish history is unending hatred leads one either to the most militant forms of nationalism or the most extreme political quiescence, but nothing in between.

A top-secret-document leak seemed to serve Benjamin Netanyahu’s interests too well, Gershom Gorenberg reports. What did he know, and when did he know it?

A student today told me, "In high school, I thought all religion was stupid and backwards. But now that you've given me Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem's correspondence to read, I see some value in religion."

Whatever issues higher education may have, this makes it worth it.

There were lots of methodological problems with Wissenschaft des Judentums as a discipline - Gershom Scholem made some of the most incisive critiques - but I do not think it is fair to judge it as a complete failure because Nazism emerged. By that standard, every movement failed - even Zionism.

Most Israelis agree: There must be a “a deep, impartial investigation into the catastrophe of October 7,” writes Gershom Gorenberg. “If there is one thing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not want, it is such an investigation”:
Netanyahu Doesn’t Want the Truth to Come Out
Israelis want an inquiry into October 7 not only for accountability but for closure.

Benjamin Netanyahu's request to be placed above the law rests on the extraordinary assumption that he has no possible replacement, Gershom Gorenberg argues:
Netanyahu Wants a Never-Go-to-Jail Card
His bid for a pardon rests on the assumption that he’s irreplaceable.

The testimony of fired Israeli security chief Ronen Bar offers a model for how to resist “a self-coup—a bid by an elected leader to seize dictatorial powers,” writes Gershom Gorenberg:

When you move out of the urban areas, you see a wide variation in letter forms, like these stones by Gershom Bartlett in Windham, CT (1757) and Solomon Brewer in Hadley, MA (1774). Both prolific, professional carvers, but developing distinctive letterforms in their local contexts.
