Every village seems to have a ‘murder barn’ as part of its psychic infrastructure. A place of bloody phantoms still screaming slaughter. Hauntings at the edge of the parish. A convenient storing of ghosts. - #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Along alleys, wyndes and neglected cobbles, we find ghosts. Not grand names made spectre, not phantoms of infamous murderers, but ghosts none the less. The shades of ratcatchers, laundry workers, gin-soaked spirits on way home from the pub. Ghosts taking the shortcuts they knew in life. – #CJosiffe

There are ambulatories in Weychester cathedral where you can hear rapid, disembodied footfall as phantoms race to evensong. A rushing of temporal shades told in a wake of swirling dust motes, the occasional mumble of excuse me. A politeness of ghosts. – #CJosiffe, 1982 #Ghosts

Some homes hold their ghosts with quiet forbearance. They do not boast of their phantoms nor advertise for psychic researchers to poke and test them. They accommodate both living and dead residents, afford privacy to both sides. Places of gentle spectral tolerance. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Weychester has a surfeit of haunted doors. Ways through walls that no iron lattice, no amount of locking will prevent phantoms from using. They phase and float through wood, make tunnels across time. Ghosts are not easily shut out. – George Kindred, 'Haunted Hookland', 1970 #Ghosts

England is a small country. Among its defining characteristics are the density of and proximity to ghosts. City streets or rural lanes, one does not have to walk far to encounter a temporal shade. No wonder the English have measurements such a phantoms per acre. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

I'll forgo the ghosts of grand house avenues – all driverless coaches, headless horses in finest tack – for lonely lane phantoms. Narrow paths that refuse space for spirit avoidance, routes where the only way home is shade-troubled. This is my haunted hodology. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Don't let the ghosts of your past continue to haunt you.
Clear them out and create new space for the phantoms of your future.

Some will claim phantoms patrol places of broken stone due to a persistence of pain. That ruins are haunted because shades are bound to them by trauma. Is it not possible that many ruins have their ghosts in the ordinary way, spectred for nothing more than once being home? – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

I'm weary of those who focus on the phantoms of dead aristocrats. Why the refusal of industrial ghosts? Why not the ghosts of factories? Abandoned warehouses? The spirits of working men and woman are infinitely more interesting than tepid tales of the entitled.– #CJosiffe #Ghosts

I am for ghosts at the glass. Ghosts of the twitching net curtain. I am for those wounds in time that discharge phantoms, leak glimpses of yesterday. If each pane is a haunted possibility, we may walk the city observed by a thousand spectral eyes. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Ghosts of ordinary, neglected streets are no less interesting than phantoms of the grand ancestral homes, no less interesting than the alleged spirits of a ruined abbey. Anywhere may be shaded by time. Haunting is either universal in possibility or it is bunkum. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

There are spirits of the stair that announce themselves in a sudden burst of perfume, laughter or unmistakable sound of children running up and down. Yet we must be honest, there are also stair spectres that shove. Predatory phantoms that delight in downfall. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

The ivy enfolded grave guardians of Ashcourt necropolis exist in lithic time. We flicker and fizz in their slow seeing. For the most part we hardly register. When we do, we are trespassing ghosts. Edge of eye phantoms moving against the speed of stone. – #CLNolan

We walk streets and we know which properties are ghost-shivered. We don't need to know their local reputation for phantoms, wild knockings, bloodstains that ap pear on deadly anniversaries. We have an ineffable instinct for such places. Our bones know. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Some places hold their phantoms. No amount of ruination nor loneliness will shift them. Their spectres are trauma tethered, bound to brick or stone. The old dynamite hut on the coast at Amber Cove is one such spot. – George Kindred, 'Haunted Hookland', 1970 #Ghosts
