For #PalacesandGardens #whatsnext, I submit a garden that blends in effortlessly with its urban environment, though it's not on palace grounds. This one is in San Sebastian, Spain.

#PalacesandGardens Thursday, 15 October 2026 Theme: #LastWords This week, Mick (@mickpic.bsky.social) invites us to explore the places, words and legacies of those who have gone before us. Who—or what—gets the last word? • Resting in Style: Royal mausoleums, elaborate tombs or modest graves—someone’s final resting place, whether famous or locally remembered. • The Last Address: A palace, manor house, cottage or ordinary home. Where did someone spend their last days? Tell us their story. • Famous Last Words: A memorable quotation, farewell letter, testament or legendary final remark. Share the story that brings the photo to life. • Gone, but Not Forgotten: Statues, commemorative gardens, memorial trees or named buildings. How do we remember people long after they’ve gone? Everyone is welcome. #ECK Background photograph: A simple, flat, weathered grey gravestone set into a green lawn, marking the resting place of Frederick the Great beside Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. Small potatoes, some bearing handwritten messages, have been placed on the stone alongside bouquets of flowers, including red and pink blooms. The potatoes commemorate Frederick’s role in promoting potato cultivation in Prussia. A pale, translucent overlay softens the photograph, allowing dark-blue text to remain legible.

Our photograph shows the impressive Killashee Hotel in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland, viewed from its landscaped front courtyard on a bright, clear day. The historic Victorian building has an ornate, symmetrical appearance, with warm olive-green rendered walls contrasting with cream-coloured stone detailing around the windows, corners and architectural features. On the left is a tall, prominent bell tower, topped by a distinctive curved, dark slate roof and a small weather vane. Beneath the roof are two large arched openings containing the bells. Across the main façade are numerous tall windows, many framed with elaborate decorative stonework. Several upper sections feature ornate, curved gables, decorative finials and intricate white detailing, giving the building a grand Victorian character. The dark blue-grey slate roof stretches across the building, with several chimneys rising above it. At the centre-right is the main entrance, set beneath an elaborate arched porch with decorative stonework and a curved gable above the doorway. The entrance is approached across a broad, gravelled courtyard. In the foreground, a rectangular raised flower bed contains neatly trimmed shrubs and winter plants. Geometric strips of dark and pale paving cross the courtyard, creating strong lines leading towards the hotel. Carefully maintained hedges and lawns frame the edges. Above the building is a vivid, almost cloudless deep-blue sky, providing a striking backdrop to the ornate architecture. The photograph captures Killashee Hotel as a grand and elegant historic Irish country house, combining Victorian architecture with beautifully maintained grounds. Finally, our picture today is finished with a simple white border frame.

Good morning, Susan! Happy Friday #ECK worldwide. Some #BlueBrew would be lovely, please. An interesting surprise awaited me this morning. AnnaLois and Queen Sabine chose my #WhatsNext idea for #PalacesAndGardens theme of #LastWords coming Thursday 15 October. Details in the poster poster post.
#PalacesandGardens Thursday, 15 October 2026 Theme: #LastWords This week, Mick (@mickpic.bsky.social) invites us to explore the places, words and legacies of those who have gone before us. Everyone is welcome. #ECK ************************************************************** Note on "Poster poster post." (I did not stutter.) Yes, "poster poster post" is grammatically correct as a playful play on words, though it is a slang or joke phrase rather than standard formal English. Why It Works • First "poster": The person (the original poster or OP) who created the content. • Second "poster": The noun referring to the printed or digital graphic/image they made. • Third "post": The verb (or noun) for publishing it online (e.g., to a forum, social media, or blog).
