#gillnetting
According to Mexican law & Mexico's CITES action plan, gillnetting must be prevented not only in the small Zero Tolerance Area but in the entire #Vaquita Refuge, which is planned to become the new gillnet ban area, & where gillnetting has long been & still remains illegal.

Fishers with permits for #vaquita-safe gear have been illegally gillnetting in their panga skiffs in the Vaquita Refuge for years (example Dec 2020 @SeaShepherdSSCS @IUCNCetaceanSG)
Will vaquitas finally have a safe refuge if Mexican government legalizes gillnetting outside it?

#Resolutions2025 we've only got 1: achieve a reduction in illegal gillnetting outside Zero Tolerance Area in #Vaquita Refuge where Aug-Sept acoustics showed porpoises still present. More anti-gillnet devices improbable, must have both increased community compliance & enforcement

In early February @SeaShepherdSSCS reported an enforcement action by @SEMAR_mx against a gillnetting panga inside the #Vaquita Refuge's Zero Tolerance Area and separately removed a shrimp gillnet plus a flounder gillnet a whopping 1.5 km in length.

Local fishermen and Shetland politicians have called for stricter rules around the use of gillnetting, which hang vertically in the water like walls

Co-Chairs @IUCNCetaceanSG letter to @CITES Secretariat. Applaud anti-gillnet devices & @Claudiashein proactive approach, but "deeply concerned" ab gillnetting in #vaquita habitat. Recommend expanded enforcement & monitoring & serious investment in alternative gear with community

In a new study, a team of ecologists estimated that almost 200,000 individual birds are caught and killed in European waters annually. Gillnetting and longlining were the most deadly practices.

This kind of closed season gillnetting puts at risk not only #vaquita porpoises but also Upper Gulf community co-management potential & livelihood sustainability, as well as Mexico's efforts to restore US seafood trade through improved fishery governance for marine mammal bycatch mitigation.

2/3 Two different consecutive fishing seasons were compared & overall fishing activity declined annually in both seasons (-37% in shrimp & -19% in finfish). Also, for the first time found annual declines (-23 & -27%) rather than increases in gillnetting in the VRA #Vaquita Refuge

3/3 Still most of #Vaquita Refuge unmonitored, too many gillnetters in parts that are, & too many days of skiffs where vaquita porpoises were recently detected outside ZTA area. It's urgent to eliminate gillnetting to prevent extinction & enable recovery.

2/3 The 10 days with strong tides included a daytime hourly count with gillnetting visually confirmed by @SeaShepherdSSCS in the ZTA. It's the most challenging enforcement situation: authorities need to prevent gillnetting outside the ZTA while their vessels are active within it

Commercial fisheries coastal gillnetting and trawling are very high risk to freshwater sawfish. Compounding this impact is climate change and water harvesting, both of which alter water flows and patterns crucial for sawfish survival.
Australia’s sawfish recovery plan is long overdue for a review.

One of these @centerforbiodiv.bsky.social was #vaquita porpoise - ironic since main driver of its decline to near-extinction is gillnetting #totoaba fish for their swim bladders. Swim bladders were the original condom ⬇️

Less than 10% of all gillnet catches in South Africa fall under the legal exceptions.

If you suspect that you have come across illegal gillnetting activities, we encourage you to report it on the gillnetting reporting app.

4/5 There were social media videos this winter of fishers gillnetting in the Reserve Core Zone's estuaries.

Gillnetting is a great way to tell the world that your parents never loved you. If you use gillnets you are objectively unwanted by anyone.

"Ongoing gillnetting disrupts visual & acoustic efforts to monitor vaquitas both inside & outside of the Zero Tolerance Area. Addressing challenges exclusively within ZTA while neglecting broader Vaquita Refuge will not achieve Mexico’s conservation goals"

In South Africa, gillnetting is largely illegal.

This is because it is an indiscriminate fishing method that often captures and kills marine life unintentionally, including threatened species.

Only TWO fisheries are legally allowed to use gillnets.

1/3 Late fall normally peak shrimp season but Upper Gulf fishers complain of low prices & poor average catches (using gillnets, despite illegality since 2015). Santa Clara claims 120,000 kg, about 1/3 of Oct-Mar seasonal capture levels @CECweb, since gillnetting resumed in 2019.

3/3 Given considerable resource deployment to address 1-2 pangas gillnetting in the ZTA, greater effort is needed to govern larger area. Major improvement in compliance from the fishing community would reduce the challenge but opposition must be overcome

2/2 The last 2 times surveys were in autumn, not spring, were 2019 & 2021, with lots of illegal gillnetting for shrimp observed within the ZTA. Not this time 🙏. But still quite windy weather, making it difficult to spot & photograph the small distinctive #vaquita dorsal fins.

Among different fishing methods, the worst offenders were gillnetting (suspending huge net panels in the water column) & longlining (dragging nets 40+ km long, with numerous baited hooks, behind ships).

3/3 Mexico reported zero vessels in the Vaquita Refuge every month since October 2023, except for 4 in May 2024 during the monthlong vaquita survey (SSCS total for May 2024: 479). Mexico cannot protect vaquitas from illegal gillnetting which it fails to observe and respond to.

for now, is reduce gillnet ban area from 10,000 km2 area on paper to an approximation of the Vaquita Refuge area in reality. Such a compromise between science & community, while still risky, is much less so than fishers w vaquita-safe gear permits gillnetting all around the ZTA.
