Happy Thursday! Next up is the Glaucous-winged Gull. I see and hear these a lot! One of things I love most about living near the sea. Thank you for all your kindness 🤗💕 #bainbridgeislandbirds #pacificnorthwestbirds #birdart #glaucouswingedgull

The browner, checkered feathers are juvenile (1st basic), the dark grey ones 1st alternate. I like how the scapulars and flank feathers appear to envelop the wing panel.

A portrait of a Glaucous-winged Gull on a sparkling tan background. Its body is bright white with soft grey wings. Its eyes are small, black and rimmed with pale pink. It has a yellow bill with a red spot near the end of its bottom bill. The gull is outlined with sketchy white lines.

An Olympic Gull (Western x Glaucous-winged hybrid) about to take flight with a clump of moss in its bill. Grass pulling is an intraspecific behaviour indicating aggressive intent to nearby trespassers, "This is what I will do to you." I have seen gulls pull grass, moss, garbage, leaf litter and dock lines--whatever loose objects or materials are within grabbing distance.

This bird is starting to replace body feathers in the 1st prealternate (prebreeding) moult. The Lower Mainland is right above the intersection of the breeding ranges of Glaucous-winged Gull to the north and Western Gull to the south. The resulting hybrid swarm produces a vast array of phenotypes--birds with a unique set of characteristics--as multiple generations of mixed gulls interbreed.

Hundreds of Larus gulls in flight and on the ground, foraging for food scraps on trash mountain. Landfills have become well-trodden stopover locations for Larus species of the west coast, used by both resident Olympic Gulls and migratory Glaucous-winged Gulls and Cook Inlet hybrids from as far north as southern Alaska, perhaps further. These generalists also spend time foraging in nearby farm fields and Boundary Bay.

Olympic Gull (Glaucous-winged x Western Gull hybrid) posing for "the shot." Bulbous bill gives off Western influence, but Cook Inlet (Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull) is never far from mind. Olympic Gull landing. The depigmentation on the outer wing is asymmetrical; on the right wing, only p10 is all white, while on the left it extends to p8. The inner webs on the rest of the primaries are also quite pale, magnifying the venetian blind effect.

I named the left bird Tina, the right one Gilbert. Large Larus gulls exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males tending to be larger and bulkier than females. However, individual variation could also explain the size difference, so the jury is still out.
