Computer science student Jack Zemke was getting nowhere despite sending out hundreds of job applications that mostly disappeared into the void – ignored. With his graduation from Tulane University just days away, he was considering moving back in with his parents when he got a break thanks to a group project he had worked on involving an AI-powered search tool. As he touted it at an engineering conference, an employee at a civil engineering firm approached. “We’re not like the most on top of trends, but we know that AI is becoming a big thing,” he recalled the man saying. “We need somebody to be essentially an evangelist.” Zemke responded: “I’m your man.” It has been a difficult job market for new graduates, especially in fields like software development where artificial intelligence is shouldering more of the work. While college students majoring in computer science during the recent coding boom were getting job offers without even applying, graduates today in philosophy, art history and ethnic studies majors all have higher employment rates. Agriculture remains vital to Jamaica’s livelihoods and food supply, but among younger generations, the sector is often seen as offering limited opportunities for growth and innovation. Jadalee Lindsay’s journey offers a different perspective. Growing up in Tom’s Hope, Portland, she was surrounded by farming communities and developed an appreciation for agriculture from an early age. Her connection was also personal, as her grandfather was a farmer. Seeing the work involved in producing food and supporting families through agriculture shaped Lindsay’s understanding of the sector and instilled in her the values of hard work, resilience and community. Those early experiences influenced her decision to pursue agriculture as a career. After attending Titchfield High School, Lindsay enrolled at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE), where she pursued a bachelor of science degree in plant science. “As I got older, my interest grew beyond farming itself,” Lindsay explained. “I became curious about the science behind crop production and how technology and innovation could be used to improve the way we grow food.” Balancing the financial demands of tertiary education with her studies required Lindsay to find ways to support herself. Meta is going all in on a consumer-friendly AI agent and pushing forward with AI-powered wearable devices during a moment in the industry when its CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged it is a “wild time to be building”. At the company’s annual Connect conference on Wednesday, Zuckerberg opened his keynote address by saying “it’s no secret that people in the industry have a wide range of views about how the future is going to go”. But at Meta, he said, “we are optimists because we believe in people”.

The heads of major artificial intelligence (AI) firms pleaded with the United Nations on Wednesday to save the world or at least its people — by somehow regulating the fast-expanding technology that they have been designing. “If managed poorly, I even believe AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole,” said Dario Amodei, chief executive officer of Anthropic. And from his competitor Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, came this assessment: “We could lose control of the future to AI.”
