Global Citizen, the international advocacy platform co-founded by Michael Sheldrick, is returning to Perth, Western Australia, with a focus on addressing energy poverty. The organization will host two events on October 19-20 at the Perth Convention Centre: an action summit and a free concert. The summit aims to secure commitments from governments and businesses to provide energy access to over four million households, particularly in regions lacking reliable electricity. Sheldrick, who grew up in Perth's northern suburbs, shared his personal journey from being an academically struggling student to leading a global movement. He credited a supportive teacher for helping him overcome early challenges, which inspired his mission to provide opportunities for others. Global Citizen has mobilized over 40 million citizen actions worldwide, leading to more than 1.3 billion life-saving interventions. The organization has raised over US$50 billion for initiatives in 150 countries, including recent partnerships with FIFA, Shakira, and Burna Boy that generated $60 million for education. The Perth summit will feature speakers including Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, WA Premier Roger Cook, and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The event will conclude with a concert headlined by Perth-based band The Teskey Brothers. Sheldrick emphasized the importance of seeking help when pursuing global change, noting that 'people want to help' and that 'nine out of 10 people might say no, but don't give up.' The initiative aligns with Global Citizen's broader mission to address energy poverty affecting over 600 million people globally who lack access to reliable electricity.
