To the Editor, Residents of Leelanau County have a deep connection to the environment and are responsible stewards of our surroundings. But the harsh reality of recent years makes it clear that personal stewardship is no longer a shield against global ecological collapse. We can no longer hide from the externalities of a chaotic world and its impact on our local environment. Our microclimate is flashing massive red flags. Subsurface data shows Lake Michigan’s historic thermal cycles are breaking down. Multiple uncommon, torrential downpours demonstrate that our local climate is fracturing. Meanwhile, we have endured the haze of toxic wildfire smoke over consecutive summers—impacts that harm not only our daily lives, but our gardens and crops as well. Recent research reports outline that high-intensity conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East do far more than steal human lives. Their massive ordnance expenditures and the targeted destruction of petroleum logistics pump millions of tons of black carbon into the upper atmosphere. That soot eventually settles onto our regional snowpacks and lakes, accelerating the warming and volatile weather cycles we experience right here at home. We are caught in a series of compounding, self-reinforcing climate loops. The destruction of global carbon sinks, localized flash floods, and the physical warming of the Great Lakes are symptoms of the same existential crisis. It is time to stop ignoring the macro-picture. The Arctic's permafrost stores vast amounts of carbon. Disturbing it to extract oil and gas, combined with more burning of fossil fuels, releases greenhouse gases and accelerates global warming, harming wildlife and people.

Drilling in the Arctic isn’t worth the risk.

By 2060, China will only be using fossil fuels for 9% of its electricity generation. 50% of total generation will be solar, 30% will be wind. That means China is not only killing big oil but also big coal. Renewables are currently outpacing demand growth so they will be retiring old plants from now

It's been wetter than normal on the Leelanau Peninsula as there is more moisture in the atmosphere and everything was greener all summer.
