Though the gooseberryleaf globemallow lost the tallest stems in the frost, closer to the ground, the blooms never stopped.

Okay, I did more reading on it, and this is almost certainly the globemallow bee, a solitary native bee which specializes in this plant family. Females dig little nests, but these are males, which don’t have nests and just sleep in the flowers!

Hey…Computer, enhance! The big globemallow had a bunch of bees curled up in the flowers! They all look like the same kind, but I don’t know my native bees here well yet.

Desert or Apricot Globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua).

In late May through June, I rush to the hills where they grow in abundance to perfectly time their morning opening. Too early, too tightly closed. Too late, I'll miss the sleeping bees. This one, perfect timing.
