Just to be that guy, The Glomar Explorer was not a deep-sea mining vessel. It was purpose built for the clandestine submarine recovery and only converted to civilian deep-sea mining use after the operation.
Today on July 4, 1974, Glomar Explorer, a deep-sea mining vessel, was part of a covert US operation to recover a sunken Soviet sub.
Parts were recovered along with the bodies of Soviet sailors who were then buried at sea.
