Unexpected theme of games of 2024 appears to be: entirely vibes-based pronunciation of Gaelic/Goidelic names 😭

For Ireland, you’re basically looking at cuts in the 16th/17th century, 1165, and then the middle of the first millennium AD (for the supplanting of the P-Celtic Belgae/Erainn/Dairine by the Q-Celtic Goidelic identity)

Clan in English is a borrowing from common Goidelic clann, 'children'. Scottish kindreds were called things like Clann an Toisich and Clann Chatain because they claimed descent from specific individuals referred by those terms or names (so the Children of the Chief, or the Children of Catan)

It is actually hugely dangerous for society that I am now training to become a planner because that is the straight and narrow world historical path to me pulling a Goidelic Skopje on whatever town is foolish enough to let me.

In nearby Buckland Monachorum, another stone was found being used in a blacksmith's, inscribed, '(The stone) of Sabinus, son of Maccodechetus.' Sabinus is a Latin name, while his father’s is Goidelic (early Irish).

That's not Wales (Brythonic language), that's Sodor (Goidelic language)

Actually so Froði is an Old Norse name that was held by multiple kings and roughly means "clever" and so there is actually a fucking amazing Goidelic analogue of exactly that name

Welsh (a Goidelic language not a Gaelic one) might be closer, but Wales has actually adapted the Ulpan system from Israel to help adults learn Welsh!

Just getting on the record: despite being minority languages, neither Gaeilge nor Gàidhlig ever stopped being in everyday usage. The third Gaelic/Goidelic language, Manx, did and is going through a small revival, but I doubt that’s what they mean.

i am sorry to be coming here with my actual knowledge of goidelic languages ruining everyone's fun

Welsh is one of a group of languages defined as Celtic and most closely resembles Breton and Cornish - the Brittonic group. Irish and Scots Gaelic and Manx are known as Goidelic and are very different!

The proto-Celtic language split into Brythonic and Goidelic sometime between 800-100 BC. Perhaps even earlier. This is at least 500 years before the Anglo-Saxon invasion. And Scotland didn’t switch from the Brythonic to Goidelic until about the 12th century CE.

The Iceni were a Celtic tribe, but not a Gaelic one. Brythonic language family rather than Goidelic.

You should all read the Annals of Ulster. They're a great read, as long as you have a PhD's worth of knowledge about the Early Middle Ages in the Goidelic world and thought Finnegans Wake a bit light.

Oh did not expect what that’s a reference to

Honestly would’ve thought he’d be bigoted against the Celtic peoples, or at least the Goidelic ones
