can’t think of a single public transit project like this: one of Seoul’s first tram lines was laid from the entrance of Deoksu Palace, where King Gojong lived, to Hongneung, the tomb of his Queen who was slain by Japanese ronin, as a symbolic act of resistance and a personal act of grief for Gojong

Matters were complicating back in the East. On Jan. 21, 1919, former Emperor Gojong died suddenly, sparking mass rumors of Japanese poisoning the king to prevent his re-installation. China-based activists did have a plan to bring Gojong to Beijing then have him travel to the Paris Peace Conference

To give a little context to the controversy around #PerfectCrown, the show used a crown and chant that were used when Joseon was a vassal state of China. The crown & chant were changed by King Gojong when he declared himself emperor of Joseon. This sounds like self aggrandizement but 1/3

Currently. But China and Taiwan had emperors in the past! Beginning with the Qin dynasty in 221 BCE. So did Japan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
So did Korea - Emperor Gojong (The Gwangmu Emperor). He reigned from 1897 to 1907, and then Emperor Sunjong (The Yunghui Emperor) from 1907 to 1910.

In particular, she introduced her great-grandfather as someone who studied medicine in Japan before opening a Western-style clinic in Hanyang (Seoul) and treating Emperor Gojong.

Speculation spread that her great-grandfather was the doctor Ahn Sang Ho, which her agency subsequently confirmed.

Sounds neat and good choice of a beverage here given the King's appreciation of coffee!

it was actually a move to strengthen Joseon's sovereignty when it was being encroached on by Japan, China, and Russia. A few years after Gojong declared himself emperor, Japan overthrew the government and put an end to Joseon. 2/3 #kdrama #PerfectCrown

Seoul (known as Gyeongseong, then Keijo under Japanese rule) has a fascinating rail history not discussed enough imo. It used have a very dense tram network, and its origins are fascinating. The first tram line route would later serve as the first subway tunnel route for Seoul Metro Line 1.

Neurodivergent late Joseon era nobleman:

“Wait! I’m supposed to take the civil service exam in a separate room, and get 1.5x time and movement breaks. King Gojong himself approved my accommodations. “

“Hey, this isn’t that hard…I guess my hyperfixation on Confucian texts came in handy”

It was Emperor Gojong, the last imperial ruler of Korea and great grandpa has his own entry in their version of Wikipedia for the many ways he betrayed Korea, including maybe helping to murder Gojong (hasn't been proven). Plus her family is rich thanks to grandpa cozying up to the Japanese.

Is fur trim armor mostly a Korean Mongolian thing? I haven't found historic "viking" artifacts or art with it with it.

Yuan dynasty art doesn't have fur trim armor, Austria's emperor was gifted Joseon fur trim armor in 19c, perhaps western artists saw and applied it to legendary Mongols of yore.
