I think Joe Sacco is one of the best journalists at work. I’ve taught Voices from Gaza many times, & this year I thought I’d teach Safe Area Gorazde. But I fear the context would take up too much prep time. It’s another world for 18 yr olds.

The story of the RWF in Gorazde really should be much more widely told.
On 28th May 1995 Bosnian Serbs attacked British UN peacekeepers in Gorazde (The Royal Welsh Fusiliers). The RWF fought back, firing over 1500 SA rounds. The town (enclave) was saved but 33 RWF soldiers were taken hostage by the Bosnian Serbs.

The situation in Sarajevo got worse in May 1995. Firing incidents went up significantly and between 22 - 23 May 1995 both Bosnian Serbs seized their heavy weapons from UN Weapon Collection Points.
On 24 May Bosnian Serbs ambushed an aid convoy going to Gorazde. The RWF fired back.

Their CO later said that "Goražde was a terrible place. I have later served in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the Goražde mission was by far the hardest I have ever done. People who weren’t there, can never understand how bad it was".

I'm so often haunted by the parallels between 21st century India and the stories of Yugoslavia's swift descent into ethnonationalist terror under Milošević as recorded by Sacco in SAFE AREA GORAZDE.

#OTD on 4th May 1992, the siege of the town of Goražde in eastern Bosnia began. Goražde’s siege lasted until December 1995, and 511 civilians were killed in that time.

Jsem zvědavý kdy Srbové po svém padlém hrdinovi pojmenují nějaké náměstí. Nebo takové Srbské kulturní centrum Ratka Mladiče v Goražde, to by mělo ten správný švunk. Tu svini včetně jeho okolí měli smáznout už při zadržení a ještě by to bylo málo.

I often think of the stories of Bosniak families recorded in Joe Sacco's SAFE AREA GORAZDE, and it's terrifying because I recognise so much of what they describe in India of the last 12 years, the way they talk about friends and neighbors turning against them, a culture turning swiftly to atrocity.
