A quiet man is sometimes a force in his own element.
Once, when I was younger, my mother took me to a circus. My brothers and sisters were all atwitter with excitement, waiting for the show to begin, but moments before the curtain was supposed to come up. A lion broke free from his cage, and there was mayhem. People ran and screamed, and the other circus animals made a riotous level of noise until the sound of a whip split the air and all fell silent. The ringmaster, or whatever you call that role, had stepped center stage. In moments, the lion had climbed back into his enclosure and the show resumed. The man held absolute command over his circus. It was an extension of himself. Even the audience fell in line. That is the closest comparison I have for when Finley Blodgett– quiet, polite, and reserved in his daily life– steps in front of a jury and comes alive. Before, in his seat, he seemed painfully young and inexperienced. Lost even. But here, in ten paces, he was transformed into the lion tamer and main event, and the jury floor was an extension of himself.
