US national debt just hit $40 trillion.

Why?

HINT: It's NOT because the government is trying to provide its citizens healthcare or childcare.

"We have $36 trillion of debt," says the President, confusing government debt with trade deficits.

For the first time in 80 years, the federal debt-to-GDP ratio is over 100%.

In the past, the rich used to pay higher taxes.

Now, the government pays the rich interest on a swelling debt, caused largely by lower taxes on the rich.

It's a big switcheroo.

The United Kingdom is the second largest owner of US government debt after Japan.

If America wants to bankrupt us, we should simply dump the debt & watch America burn.

Trump *is* doing debt cancellation.

It's just not your student or medical debts.

In his second term alone, Trump has already canceled $1.5 billion of criminal debt — payments fraudsters owe the federal government and victims.

They don't mind debt cancellation—for themselves.

It did not include any changes to the debt limit.

If "government can finally start living within its means again", as Speaker Johnson just said, then why did we have to raise the debt ceiling by 5 trillion dollars?

President Musk and Vice President Trump just suffered a MAJOR DEFEAT with the overwhelming passage in the House of the government spending bill — WITHOUT the suspension of the debt limit.

Minnesota: Split bipartisan legislature.

Kept the government open. Invested in improving lives. Responsible budget cuts.

Washington: Republicans control House, Senate, Oval Office.

Government shutdown. Driving up health care costs by thousands. Skyrocketing national debt.

Trump and Republicans better not say shit about government spending or debt when they threw the debt limit into the CR spending bill. They killed their own talking point.

Republicans want to nuke the debt limit so that Trump has free rein to spend unchecked and explode the debt!

Oh.

Moody’s downgraded our credit rating for the first time in U.S. history.

We went from a AAA to AA1 rating.

The company cited rising government debt and persistent fiscal deficits.

Yet Republicans and Donald Trump want to raise the debt.

Trump's CFPB not only wants to scrap it, but has even joined forces with corporate groups suing to block it.

There was a colossal amount of boy crying wolf about US government debt from the right for ages, but the wolf eventually does come and eat the kid at the end. US debt servicing is rapidly approaching 20% of all government spending.

It really is incredible how despite a half-century of expanding executive power, ballooning the debt, bloating the government, and policing private behavior, the GOP is still discussed as the party of small government libertarianism and fiscal responsibility. Just no relation to reality at all.
