#GrantMcLennan started as a filmmaker, not a musician – McLennan originally wanted to be a filmmaker and studied under avant-garde director Albie Thoms at the University of Queensland. He only picked up a guitar after meeting Robert Forster, who convinced him to start a band.

20 years ago today, the Guardian (10 May 2006) paid tribute to the late great Grant McLennan.
#GrantMcLennan #GoBetweens #TheGoBetweens @robertrotifer.bsky.social
"The Australian singer-songwriter Grant McLennan, who has died aged 48, would have recognised the irony of his own death - taking an afternoon nap prior to holding a party - because his keen, literate songs always observed the nuances and mysteries of life. McLennan was half of his country's most critically acclaimed rock group, the Go-Betweens. With his songwriting partner Robert Forster, he pioneered a strong, subtle musical style that was lauded by critics and a discerning public."

20 years ago today, the Times (9 May 2006) paid tribute to the late great Grant McLennan.
#GrantMcLennan #GoBetweens #TheGoBetweens @robertrotifer.bsky.social
"GRANT McLENNAN was arguably one of the finest songwriters ever to emerge from the Australian music scene. McLennan and the Go-Betweens, the band he co-founded in 1980 with Robert Forster, represented a pinnacle in Antipodean popular music. McLennan and Forster formed a potent songwriting partnership. Forster's approach was edgy and brooding; McLennan's style more wistful and romantic. Yet they complemented each other so perfectly that they were frequently described as 'Australia's Lennon and McCartney'."
