It was ahead of its time, introduced a background mechanic to character creation, had a "gratuitous injury" table, it's own unique magic system, had a nice mastercrafting system for equipment and weapons (mainly weapons), and had classes bult with compatibility for the Epic level progression system.

"Ayisyen Pa Gen Zanmi: A Meditation On Anti-Blackness, Ressentiment, And The Structure of Anti-Haitian Solidarity" is a meditative essay that is articulated by way of the anecdotal through the lens of Afro-pessimism, which chronicles a history of gratuitous antiBlack violence that engulfs the social, epistemological, psychological, and cultural dimensions of Haiti and Haitian peoples globally. Derilus contends by way of anecdote that while antiBlackness is inarguably the fulcrum of all other kyriarchal structures (e.g.: fatphobia, transphobia, misogyny, colorism, biphobia, adultism, capitalism, fascism, racism, enbyphobia, speciesism, childism, homophobia, sanism, ableism, classism, anthropocentrism, fatphobia, ageism, etc.) there are starkly minute differences between antiBlackness and anti-Haitianism. In view of this vitriol, Derilus speculates further if ressentiment, a philosophical concept introduced by 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in his 1887 book, On The Genealogy of Morals, that is defined as a point in which the subject (e.g.: the African diaspora) directs hostility toward another subject or object (e.g.: Haitians) is one of the sources of their ills. It is important to note that ressentiment is not reducible to jealousy or envy and if once formerly enslaved Africans freed themselves whereas several other Slave rebellions were unsuccessful, where does the thought of unfreedom go? Calvin Warren, who is a scholar of Continental Philosophy, queer theory, Black Philosophy, Afro-pessimism, and theology, adds to this concept of ressentiment in his piercing essay, "Black Nihilism And The Politics of Hope" stating: "Ressentiment constitutes torment without relief, and the desperation for relief results in forms of self-injury." Is this torment without relief the totality of anti-Haitianist violence that is bundled in the sentiment that everyone wants to be Black, but no one wants to be Black and in the African diaspora, no one wants to be Haitian?

Banana Fish might be the r**iest anime I've seen to date. Like, the psychological stuff feels so much more impactful than any physical act could portray on screen. You see and feel the trauma over the course of every episode. I do appreciate all of the gratuitous headshots and violence it has.
