Most trees detect gravity using structures within the cells of their roots & shoots called statoliths. These tell them which way is up. It is known as gravitropism

Slope trees have to arrange their roots to prevent them toppling over, but they will almost always grow directly up

The starch granules are visible inside the cells and have shifted from the center to the corners of the cells that is now pointing down along the gravitropic force. On the right is a sketch from Marchant, showing a root tip with arrows that indicate the auxin flow: Down toward the QC inside the vasculature, then out to the sides and back up toward the shoot in the outer tissues. When the root is slightly tilted, the shoot-ward auxin flow is redirected to the lower side, where it inhibits cell elongation. Hence, the cells on the opposite side elongate more, which leads to root bending.

I have a box of 1000 bulbs ready 🤗 one of my favourite garden jobs🌷

Did you know bulbs grow even if planted upside down as they have statocytes with statoliths that sense gravity (gravitropism) guiding shoots up & roots down, while light (phototropism) & stored energy help correct it🌷

In Oslo’s Royal garden, I only met with sorrow and pain.
It’s not a weeping willow, but a weeping beech. He suffers from a lack of gravitropism (the ability of a plant to know which way is "up").
I tried to give him a comforting hug, but as you can see, I am way too small.

Graphical abstract - (shortened, full abstract in paper): Gravitropism is a plant response to gravity that directs organ growth and development, playing a key role in the adaptation of land plants. While its molecular basis has been extensively studied in flowering plants, much less is known about this process in other plant lineages. Here, we investigated the gravitropic response of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a model for early land plant evolution. In darkness, the thallus tips extended upward, forming several straight, narrow structures whose growth direction was consistently opposite to gravity and disrupted by clinostat treatment. These structures contained amyloplasts in parenchymatous cells, and their sedimentation preceded gravitropic curvature, suggesting a role as statoliths. Amyloplast sedimentation started near the tip and slowed with distance, and in more distal regions, both the size and the number of amyloplasts decreased.
