Here are three magnificent pieces from the #GreatWar by James McBey.
James McBey Paintings in Palestine:
Nov 4 1917 troops of the Imperial Camel Corps move through the desert, creating a cloud of sand and dust as they go.

Nov 1 1917 British engineers repair a three-arched railway viaduct of the Damascus-Beyrout Railway

I finally finished my summer & fall travels and started in earnest on @alexchurchill.bsky.social’s “Ring of Fire.” Highly recommended! It’s filling in the gaps in my #GreatWar knowledge - Africa, Balkans - and its use of first-hand observations makes it an engaging read.

During Tolkien's convalescence in a Birmingham military hospital after returning from the Somme, the following poem appeared in the January 1917 issue of its magazine. Perhaps #Tolkien read it and took it to heart. He wrote 'The Cottage of Lost Play' the next month.

The donkeys and lions idea is one of the most enduring (and controversial) tropes of #WW1. Dan and Spencer at Not So Quiet on the #WesternFront take a deep dive into this subject and de-construct the roots of this myth.

A new issue would come out the first of every month, which means #Tolkien would have had access to the issues for November and December 1916 and January 1917.

For the project British Fantasy and the First World War, I have been researching trench journals and unit magazines from this period and found the one for the hospital in Birmingham where #Tolkien stayed in November 1916 (and through the winter) after returning from the Somme.

After taking Gorizia and extending a bridgehead, Cadorna decides to push Austria-Hungary out of the war. Italy quits after only a few days and heavy casualties on both sides. (Which neither side can sustain.) The war of attrition regathers pace and requires many months of rest.

Kimberly-Clark used cellucotton to develop surgical dressing, gas mask filters, and other products. After the war when demand plummeted, the company learned that US nurses in the war improvised wonderful sanitary pads from it. It opened up a huge new market still strong today!

Today in 1917 Brazil becomes the only South American nation to join the war. Tiired of German subs sinking their ships, they declare war on Germany and join the Allies. Brazil will send troops to Europe in 1918 and support the Allied anti-submarine campaign.

Recent Italian gains force Germany to aid Austria-Hungary. Using poison gas, storm troops and infiltration tactics they rout Italy, annihilating the 2nd Army. Italy retreats 150 km to the Piave River. The government collapses, Cadorna resigns, and Italy loses 270,000 prisoners.

Happy Birthday Dracula! Bela Lugosi born this day. He served in WW1 with the Hungarian Army in the Carpathian Mountains. His experiences with death, including being wounded and buried under a pile of corpses, helped him become a horror star. He was buried in his Dracula cape!
