How it started: trimmed greenware, smooth before any carving. Then the carved lid after bisque firing, before glaze.

Let me know what you think!

independent ceramicists candling bisque ware hold kilns just below boiling for hours before the final glaze firing.

allowing trapped moisture to evaporate slowly prevents greenware hairline fractures that ruin Weeks of hand-thrown pottery.

I did pottery for my art class for all 8 semesters of high school but hadn't thrown a pot for 20 years before my wife signed me up for a class/studio time and I've been really enjoying it, that is all thanks for reading

What a relief that the kiln gods came through after the nerves of that long wait, and the greenware firing going well too. Fitting sgraffito ornaments and buttons into the same run sounds like a lovely mix of small, careful work. I hope everything glazes up the way you're picturing it.

The pressure accordian has been brutal the past few days, triggering migraines and arthritis depending on the swing 😝.

I keep planning to take my greenware to fire, but then go sculpt instead, hah!

i could make a vases and other decorative or less functional stuff, but, why? i wouldn't use them. i'm looking at two greenware vases in finished states and they look fine, good even, i just don't care about them. made them to make them, to practice. i feel nothing.

I'm in a race with myself to get things made for the ACC sale on November 14. Leaf plates, as always, ornaments, boxes, mini sculptures...probably too many different things but where's the fun in not trying to do it all?? 🫠

I tried giving him a funny hairstyle to make sculpting it easier but gave up and now his head is a hole.

This month's project has been ceramic flutes! I made way too many (more than this!!), but it's been a fun challenge. Currently, they all play. We'll see after their bisque firing (and final/glaze firing,) if they work.

(don't worry -- I filled the kiln with other stuff too. Don't want to waste!).

independent pottery makers let greenware dry slowly under plastic sheeting for three weeks before the bisque firing.

rushing the evaporation trapped inside thick stoneware walls creates invisible micro-fissures that crack open under high kiln heat.

When you make it all the way to the pottery store with fragile greenware, set it down onto the counter and then the damn thing breaks
