The Saga of Grettir the Strong. One of the better-known Icelandic Sagas, “Grettir” tells the tale of a rough and rowdy outlaw who is cursed to be unlucky after killing a revenant in battle. Scholar Amy Amendt-Raduege has drawn comparison between Grettir and Boromir.

good ol' REH's birthday today, so why not go read this thing i wrote for @chalicotherex.bsky.social's news letter about Robert E. Howard's particular love for a very specific and very idiosyncratic translation of the Norse saga "Grettir the Outlaw"

Cleaning up and forgot all about this issue—being able to stick saga outlaw, Grettir the Strong into an an existing Icelandic fairytale was a lot of fun.

The Saga of Grettir the Strong. My current favorite of the eight-or-so Icelandic Sagas I’ve read, featuring a man cursed to be unlucky and one of the most haunting battles in literature, between Grettir and the corpse of a shepherd who was killed and then possessed by a wight.

A striking thing in "heroism" in Old English and Old Norse texts was how close to monsters the heroes were depicted. Beowulf is essentially a mirror of Grendel and the Dragon in. Then there's Grettir, Egil etc

Medieval heroes were tame monsters for fighting monsters - my favourite heroic model
I want people to spend less time talking about "tragically flawed" heroes and more on "regrettably necessary" heroes. Sometimes your heroes "flaws" are a necessary answer to the flaws of what they're saving you from, and we don't talk enough about that as an indictment on society instead of them.

Jim Henson's Storyteller: Fairies issue.

Wrote in Icelandic Saga outlaw-hero Grettir the Strong into the old Hildur, Queen of the Elves story.

There was a nameless Grettir-like character in the original so maybe it was him all along anyway.

Repost with 3 clans you haven't played but want to!!!

• Snail Gangrel
• Grettir
• The Long-Armed Sabbat Vampires in Bloodlines who I at first thought were an unplayable Vampire Clan like the Tzimisce whose Deal was that they had long arms.
No idea why I believed this but I've come back around on it

Here's a #WeekBforBlue for #WaterWednesday - the view from the rather spectacular Hofsós swimming pool last Feb - bliss! 🩵🏊🏼‍♀️❄️ In the distance you can see flat-topped Drangey island, where Grettir the Strong, of saga fame, lived out his final years 🏝️🪜
